Hey all.....new to HAMB. Here's my dilemma... I rebuilt a 1962 chevy 283 to install in my 1996 Chevy dually 4x4 stick trans. I knew I needed the factory oil filter adapter to make the oil filter clear the front driveshaft....picked one up from a 1993 350 chevy 4x4 truck in the local junkyard. It does not seat/seal up into the 283's oil filter cavity. The bolt holes lined up and I used a new gasket and O-ring....but when I hit the oil pump drive shaft in the distributor hole with the drill to give it a priming, the oil began leaking heavily around the adapter within 5 seconds of drill spinning. Did I somehow miss another part from the junkyard engine which I need? My 16 year old son and I have been rebuilding this engine all winter as money allowed...we are both chomping at the bit to hear it purr....we want to get it off the engine stand and into the truck already. Anyone done this before with older chevy engines ? Any other suggestions?
using the later spin on adapter/oil byp*** on a 283 does not work as you have found out. you need to use your old byp*** with an aftermarket adapter like Wix # 24061
you need this , along with your old byp*** this is what the byp*** valve looks like , you need to use both together
I rebuilt a 60's 283 for our truck and I recall I had to get a adapter and a gasket from a cartridge filter and bolt it up with the two 5/16" bolts to use a spin on filter.
Yup, 36-3 Window is right on the money. Trans Dapt #1059 is another spin-on oil filter adapter. Fits 56-67 SBC. You can find them at Pep Boys, Advance Auto, and other places, too, I'm sure.
Mr Gasket has one too , their part # 1270 , but in the past i've had trouble with them leaking. that's why i prefer the Wix....i've used several of them with no problems
Exactly correct unless you use the adapter that has the byp*** valve piece built in it. This Fram kit will work in place of those pieces too. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...ap?ck=Search_N0538_-1_4398&pt=N0538&ppt=C0119 Summit link http://www.summitracing.com/parts/frm-hpk1
It's bad enough that he building what is going to be a gutless wonder that cost twice to build as what a 350 would have let along have a smart ***ed remark from the peanut gallery.
Sure, But its totally cool here for a "high post count" member to spout off about running a 350 when someone mentions oil filter clearance issues with a 289 or 302. P*** the peanuts please.
What I don't get is why you would put such a small engine in a dually and why talk about a '96 Chevy on this forum.
OK; let's sort this out for you, the spin-on adapter uses longer bolts so that it can reach through the spin-on adapter and the original by-p*** thing, but,,, you will need to sandwich the oil cooler adapter on top of that so,,, you will need some even longer bolts. This should work as long as the square-cut O'ring is first (as in against the block). However, all this **** stacked up may create a situation where the oil filter comes in contact with something? In that case you could use the shorter oil filter for the p***enger cars. It is half the length. Hope this helps!
First off your first post belongs in the introduction forum. A 283 is a good motor but it's going to be a gutless wonder in a big truck like that but if your 16 year old is going to be driving it, it may not be a bad idea. Wont be getting many speeding tickets except in school zones.
Well guys, It is an old motor and maybe it's for his tow vehicle, and I understand that intros are not required anymore,,,,,,,,,
Some of the spin-on conversion kits do away with the stock by-p*** valve, but then use a FORD application spin-on filter that has a built-in, by-p*** valve. If I'm not completely correct on this, someone will expand on it. Maybe the 283 is just a temporary replacement engine. Lets just hope he uses the dually to haul "old" parts with. Butch/56sedandelivery.
I thank you ALL for your responses ! To add info though , this truck will be used sporadically for things such as towing other cars on our tow dolly....hauling coal....firewood....and pulling a 32 foot camper to some local campgrounds. It will not be a daily driver. The country backroads in the area where I live ( mostly mtns ) don't allow me to get up past 55 mph. The 4.10 gears, mild cam and edelbrock 4 bbl with the granny low 4 speed are about all I need. My main concern was clearing that front driveshaft. I apologize for not being computer site savvy.
Mr 48 . I came here with the same problem Mtn man Summit description[ your link] says this """"Not for use in 283 or 327 equipped Chevy II. """" I have the original piece [ was on another engine ] http://www.jegs.com/i/Melling/689/M...mCfx2NirLbwJrCuD_5Dz5ao9vCT81nvAaAq59EALw_wcB and can not figure out what pieces are needed for what kits mentioned .. I am working with a 1966 283 out of Chevelle.....any ones help will be extremely appreciated.... Thanks Dan
