Here's an idea. It's one of those you won't know if it'll work or not until you've crawled about under the dash and taken a good look.

Mount an OEM self-cancelling switch to the steering column, but a good 8" or so further forward, so it is under the dash. Mount it with the stalk pointing up. Shorten the stalk to about 1-1½" long, and attach a suitable end to it. Now rig a linkage to a period-looking lever that protrudes from under the dash. Voilà! Discreet, period-looking, and self-cancelling!

    I like that!

my 34 coupe has the turn signals inside the headlights. I plan to have the lever under the seat, pointing forward with an indicator light on the dash or above the windshield.
I also have the option of using an old bus turn signal ***embly I picked up at the local swap meet...has a left, right and cancel ****on you push but it could be awkward finding the right ****on under the seat.
I also will leave my column clear of any clutter from turn signals.
Rear lights are 40 chevy with 2 filiment sockets/bulbs.
I don't trust the kids on the street to know what my hand signal means.

I had my turn signals in plain sight on my 32 pickup,,can you see them?

I used the fog lights as both turn signals and fog lights with double filament bulbs.

Inside the cab I used an old clamp on Napa add on turn signal switch with light indicator built in. HRP

I didn't pay over 15 bucks for any of them. My favorite is the upper right one. The upper parts of it are pot metal and polish up beautifully. So primitive...sooo cool....IMHO

if you're going to drive at night... I definately recommend turn signals... I don't want to put any in my 38 Nash sedan, as it didn't come with them, & no one ever installed any aftermarket...

... people don't know what hand signals are any more... every single time I signal a right turn, everyone thinks I'm waving... I've gotten to where I don't trust anyone on left turns, & if no on coming traffic is coming, I'll cheat to the middle of the road, so they can't try to p*** me when I'm turning...

& yes, if you are at a stop on a hill with a manual ( my Nash is ) it gets challenging

BTW... if you decide you want to just use hand signals, I saw on E-bay a long time ago, a big reflector, that you slip over your hand, for hand signalling at night... I might actually pick up a vintage one to put in my Nash for the car shows ( vintage turn signals ) ;)

Problem is that they seem to be multiplying faster than fleas on a dog.

Look at some swap meets for a vintage switch. I found teardrop shaped self cancelling switch for $10 that has a small rubber wheel that runs against the bottom of my steering wheel. It is so small that it is mostly concealed by the steering wheel. The lever is the only chrome part so I painted it to match the interior of my '50 Ford.

how are you supposed to get ahead in life if everyone knows your next move? I find most people if the see your blinker on try to keep you from getting in front of them. But turning left off a two lane road with no median is dangerous. People dont know what hand signals are.

  8. Traditional or not, you need turn signals. Few people under 60 have ever used hand signals or know what they mean. If you want an uncluttered column, you can mount a double pole/double throw toggle switch in the seat riser where it is unobtrusive but easily reached. Personally, I would use a vintage add-on turn signal switch that clamps to the coumn.

This is exactly what I've done on my avatar and it works great - I just have about 2-3" of the lever showing and popped in some LED lights to show my turn signals is on through the bottom lip of the dash. You can just see the lever in the two attached pics .... sorry, I have no actual build pics of mounting it

That kid (and the original judge) should have his nuts cut off and his license revoked. From the Ariz. driver's license manual:

...Turns may be indicated using electric
turn signals, hand signals, or both.

But maybe the orginal judge was a woman....

I found a state trooper in NY state that did not know what hand signals were he claimed I gave him the "finger" when he pulled up behind me and flashed his lites for me to move over gave me a speeding ticket for 4 miles over the limit. Turn signals were added when I got home after that trip. On all cars now. No more blue dots either. H-3 halogen bulbs in the 48 Chev (Juliano's kit) and 1157's in stainless buckets on the F-1.

  14. Painless also has a stand alone add-on turn signal kit with toggle switches. Check out Jeggs # 764-30120, Turn Signal Kit, typical Painless- first cl*** quality, TR

Man I don't know about where you live but the stupid ***holes around here that have driving license amaze me.If they aren't talking on the phone or text messaging they are running red lights just so they won't have to sit at it for 3 minutes.. I beleave in GOOD bright turn and brake lights so these ***holes can see what you plan on doing even though they don't use theirs or have a clue how dangerous a car can be. I fix smashed cars daily from these jerks. Pays the bills and buys hot rod parts,LOL. But it still makes me nervous driving my custom .My vote is turn signals.

I use the toggle switch from Kwik Wire. It's easy to wire and looks clean.

Drivers today typically have their head in their ***. I have used hand signals and been looked at like it's some new funky wave.

I hope to never need it, however, I'd rather be sitting on the side of the road with a wrecked car WITH turnsignals vs WITHOUT. Way easier to win the argument of a driver not paying attention, especially if he/she keeps ****ing with their phone in the squad car.

I use some relays from Radio Shack. There is one for each side. They disconnect the brake wire and attach it to the flasher when grounded, They also disconnect the running lights on the top of the Guide lights and attach the flasher to them for front turn signals. I use a an extreamly small switch that is mounted on the side of the 40 steering column bell to ground the relays. I have used this system for over 40 years with no problems

My roadster's cowl lamps are wired for turn signals. A lot of kids today have no idea what hand signals are. I don't want them ramming into me. Turn signals are a GOOD idea.

I took out the seal beam lights in my 28 roadster and went back to halogen lights with turn signals in them. Even though I am running 6volt I was able to find bulbs at Autozone and painted them orange. I used the hidden switch and put it on the shift lever. They work well and I like them. I still look in the mirror and get out of the way of the zombies.

When I was in school the first time I met a buddy of mine's dad I saw he only had one arm. When I asked my buddy about it afterwards he told me his dad had been signalling to turn and a truck came round the outside and took his arm off. When that nearly happened to me six years ago as I was in a left turn only lane in a stock vintage car and some ****ing idiot on a cellphone in an Escalade came around the wrong side of the road trying to overtake me and nearly took my arm off I gave up on hand signals for good....

Realizing this is a old thread that has been resurrected by a newbie I thought I would post a photo of my hidden turn signal switch and arm under the dash in mt 32 sedan.

It was the aftermarket type and I had it towards the front edge of the dash,,,push the handle in the direction I was turning,,,I had to wire it opposite from the way it would have been on the column. HRP

Cool to see this thread back up. I wound up installing the cheapie chrome turn signal stalk with the hose clamp and then ran the signals to the parking lamps on my guide headlights. I wanted to keep the steering column lean and clean but I figure having signals are the lesser of evils. I actually like the way it all turned out.

And you werent exaggerating.:D Thats the only clamp-on I've seen that I feel is elegant enough for an open car. Most of the others I've seen are a bit "agricultural" for my tastes...

And cheap in quality as well. Look for the Asian label, it's there somewhere. I've gone through 2, so far. Both had the same problem. The little indicator lights didn't work. The signals worked, but not the little indicator lights.

I opened my last one to see if I could fix it and was amazed at the cheap way it was made and set up inside. It looked like a 3rd grade science project inside. Cost was around $30, so no big deal, I guess.
