Once it's registered as an antique vehicle, no. In fact, you'll never have to go to the DMV for that vehicle again. I get a new tag every 5 years and apply for it over the internet. New tag arrives about 2 weeks later.

Also, don't let them scare you with the speech you get when you tell them you want antique tags instead of cl***ics. (Cl***ics have to have yearly inspection, antiques don't). If you ever get pulled over, just make it clear to the officer that you are testing out some recent mods to get ready for the next show.

  3. Depends on where you go. I registered my '56 F100 in TX that I bought in AZ. Used '56 Texas Farm Truck YOM plates, and registered as an Antique Vehicle. No inspection needed, everything done at the county tax office, in & out in 5 minutes, just had the AZ ***le and proof of insurance, IIRC it was $68 out the door and the registration lasts 5 years.

***ling & Registering my late model daily driver is a whole other story, what a fiasco, 3 trips to the tax office, mail this, wait for that, fee here, fee there, and it cost me about $300 more than I expected.

I picked up a '71 Bronco about 15 years ago on eBay as a parts truck, hadn't originally planned to put it on the road but now I'm really thinking about it. Good thing is the VIN on the frame and the glove box door match, bad news is since I bought it as a parts truck it had no ***le and not even a bill of sale, having bought it on the web so many years ago, I don't even remember the seller's name, trying to track him down would be pretty much impossible. I did a quick VIN search on one of the free websites and it didn't come back with anything at all.

Is a bonded ***le my only way to get it registered so it'll be legal to drive? Is a '71 old enough for antique plates? My next door neighbor is a car guy and a county sheriff's deputy, I'm on good terms with him so I may be able to have him do the VIN verification/"inspection" if that's needed - I've been reading through the Tx DMV website to try and figure out what is needed, but I don't want to go through any steps I don't need to. Is a company that does the ***le paperwork the best solution at this point?

Yes, you will need to bond the ***le. Call Lawrence Auto ***le in Taylor, TX. They'll tell you what you need to do.
