recently bought a 51 chevy truck with a 230 si**er out of a 60 something nova with a three speed on the floor. its also open drive with a newer rearend. i know you can bolt just about any automatic ****** to the 230 and im leaning towards a powerglde. anyone running an automatic behind their 230/250?

If you are going to trouble of putting an auto, I would consider a turbo 350, or 200R4 if you want OD. The T350 has the lower first gear to help get the truck going with the relatively small six. Depending on the rear gear ratio, you may be good or bad candidate for an OD trans.

T350 is the same basic mounting as PG, but has 3 speeds. T350 is a bit larger than PG, but not too much difference.

What about a T-5 manual trans instead of the 3 speed?

Th350 will give you faster acceleration, while a powerglide would be cooler. With a L6 you need as much help as you can get, I'd go for the 350. Or even better th700, but that would seriously be uncool.. I guess nobodys gonna see it so it's really up to the build..

I've got a th350 backed behind my 250 and it works pretty well. I'm actually doing the opposite of you though and throwing in a t-5 just for fun. Overdrive never hurt anyone though.

I always thought that half the fun of having a Chevy six was running it though the gears to hear the pipes.

An aluminum glide would work fine and fit pretty good but I'm like 38Chevy454 and would rather run a turbo 350 or the 200R od trans. The turbo 350 is simple, good ones are inexpensive and they aren't spendy to fix if needed. If you did puke one on a long road trip it would be easy enough to buy one and swap trans or have just about any trans shop rebuild yours in short order and go again. There is a hell of a lot to be said for ease of repair and low cost both to buy and repair.

haha yeah i really dont want to waste a 350 on a six, i figure i can pick up a powerglide for cheap. i was thinking a t5 also but ive heard the input shaft is slightly longer... im just looking to cruise around

You would be happier and so would the L6 with something other then the glide behind it. they like more gears. And it sure is better off the line as far as get up and go. And it does not sound as if it is needing another gear once you hit the top gear. I went from the glide in my 64 so a M21.
