    For all the Willys guys out there :)
    Have a 35 Willys panel going to do a gasser project out of, what's the tallest tire that can fit in the rear opening( not tubbed or pro streeted ) will a 29 or 31" tall slick? I do not want to cut the fenders

    I can't really tell by your avatar pick, but to fit that tire in there you had to cut the fenders opening out wider?

    I had another 33 where we kept the tires in the fenders and they were 31's. Neither car was tubed. The orange car had stock fenders. We made the rearend housing to fit the wideness of the fenders...so the tires wouldn't throw crap everywhere. Didn't help much. Not great pictures hope it helps. Probably do 29 or 30's to be safe. But the 31's did fit. The Gold steel body original frame car handles much better. Chuck Finders built the orange car chassis. We did trim the gold car fenders mainly for looks. But it being a few inches wider made the gold car handle better. I believe the 31's will go under the fenders, but you have to adjust your housing withe to fit.

    Those are two nice Willys :) , are the both sbc cars? I have slots for my Willys panel, but I keep leaning more to the cragers, between the DogCatcher and your red 33 , that sealed the deal :)

    Can't wait to rip the mustang two and put a straight axel under it. Just stuck the tires on the back just to see :)

    Yes they are both blown sbc's . orange car had carbs. the gold car 4 Port Hilborn... Cragars are just fine in my book......

    Rob, If you can transfer the story to this thread, please do it, as I am tired of typing. I am giving some thought of recreating this car, with the injected SBC!

He presented me with these great shots of the car, showing the changes during it's racing career. John filled me in on the timeline, so I hope I am pretty close.
    In around '61-'62 John and his friend Chet Thomas built this 36 Willys sedan, they first used an injected 389"-421" Pontiac engine. Their main competition at the time, was Ed Smith from the Slo-Poks of Vancouver, who also used Pontiac power in his 41 Willys coupe. They had quite a battle in A/G, one would win one week, and the other the next. Sometime around '64-65, Ed had moved on to something else, John and Chet switched to an injected small block chevy, in the Willys. Around '67 they took on a third partner in the form of Jim Barnard, who had been racing a AA/FD with an early model Chrysler Hemi. Along the way, the boys hired the "multi-talented" Phil Schaffer, to chop the top 5", and lay the windshield back 2", along with painting it a beautiful, candy green and installing a "quilted" stainless steel top insert, and lettering as well. The trio ran the car through '69 or '70, the car ran in AA/FA, and with Chet at the wheel, it ran in the 7's at 190mph. A few of us, are still kicking ourselves for not buying it minus engine and trans, for $1200.00 back in the 70's. Sadly it was dissembled and the parts were used on 2 different cars, with far different themes, than the old "Assassin".

    Thanks for sharing those pics and story (and thanks to Rob for drawing my attention to it). That's one I've never seen before. I hunt for this stuff all the time, and it's rare I stumble onto one of these old gassers/altereds I've never seen. There were some radical Willyses, Anglias, Austins, etc... that ran out of the Pacific NW in the late 60s & early 70s. Unfortunately, it's extremely hard to find much on those guys.

    As for the the Assassin, did it ever run a blown SOHC Ford? I could swear Jack Coonrod once told me about a 33 Willys sedan that ran out of that area with an SOHC engine.

    Mark, Thanks for transferring my posts, this is a shot of the AA/FD that the engine came out of. Some notables in the pic, Ed "The Ace" McCulloch is on the far left, and Sid Waterman is leaning over the engine and Jim "Barney" Barnard is behind the wheel, he would be a terror in T/F in the 80's!

    It seems that there were plenty of "Assassins" around back then, Jim Crook's SOHC AA/FD shared the name. The only "Cammer" powered Willys I can remember was Dan Almandson's (sp) 39 4 dr that was injected, Dan lived in central Oregon.

    Maybe that 39 sedan is the one Jack was referring to. I was thinking it was a 33-36, but maybe that's the one.

    Does anyone have a picture of an inner 33 windshield? I have a 33 windshield frame with brackets and am mounting to a 36 and I can't figure out how the brackets bolt to the body.

    Maybe I should run my sedan as is and not convert into a coupe, it sure would be easier.

    I like the idea of leaving it a sedan. Much less common that a coupe.

    Is stock Willys spindles (model 77) strong enough for a sat. Night street car with a Rat motor? Or will or a early round ford spindles fit on a stock Willys (model 77) axel?

    I believe some of the AA/GS cars used the stock spindles. I don't think Ford spindles will bolt up. But I wouldn't let that stop me from using the Ford spindles, as there is a wide array of disc brake options available for the Ford spindles - not so much for the Willys. Good luck.

    Hopefully you have seen Jim Oddy's newest gasser, The Junkyard Dog, a sedan, like yours, made into a 2 door. Apparently he is having a ton of fun with it in the Nostalgia AA Gas Series sponsored by Summit. He also really digs towing it on an open trailer, like the old days. Search for threads on these AA Gas series.

  27. I'm with cgaswillys, leave it a four door sedan, and spend the money/time to make it more of a badass, and give those little coupes "the Willys)! Matter of fact, put the engine and seats farther back, and enjoy the leg room and wide eyed looks/compliments.

    It sold but the guy was a complete wacko!! I decided to keep it for a bit longer.
