Look around a bit, and figure out what cars you like and what custom things you'd like to do to them. Then look for one for sale that you can afford. In my experience you're better off buying something you really love, even if it means either buying a rougher one or waiting until a nicer one comes along that you can afford.

Its hard to stay motivated when it's not exactly what you want.

For example...you may decide you love the lines of a 59 impala hardtop, but find a 4 door biscayne for sale. While the 4 door sedan is still pretty cool, and could be a neat custom...it won't ever be the same car as the impala. Just keep that sort of thing in mind. It's easy to loose perspective (at least it is for me) when you come across something thats in great shape and affordable and close to what you want.

Seems to be the overall consensus, no matter what you get.

Listen to what these guys are saying!! BUY A RUNNING CAR!!! I bought a car that barely ran when I got it for my first(current) project. I was too impatient to save more money for a sounder car and have been laying underneath it since, not that thats not fun sometimes, but if youre doing it on a buget then its hard to customize when you gotta replace every part, hose, nut and washer.

bought mine from a guy who worked at a junkyard and saved it from the crusher. I shouldn't be allowed to buy things. Its comin along though, once I get the current problem fixed I can drive it for a day or two before my next trip to the parts store

Truth is i'd rather have something more common. The project I'm working on now is very unique. Most of the things I'm doing to my car have never been atempted before so finding the right parts sucks. I like the idea of a 49-51 ford because I love the look and because of the aftermarket parts. Some people tell me I should do a custom Volvo 122. They look a lot like mercs & fords when done right. I'd like to try something american though.

My plan is to keep the drivetrain stock until it dies, then swap for something better (SBF??). I want to try bagging the suspension, pinstripe over the current paint/rust, shave the body, french the headlights, caddy tails, red/black steelies on white walls. Eventually I'll try to chop the roof.
