I have a 54 Bel Air 2 door sedan I'm looking to put on the ground via airbags. I need to swap out the stock torque tube rear end, for an open drive line. I found a 96 Chevy Blazer 4x4 at my local Pick and Pull that appears to be in pretty good shape with 3:73 gearing. It measures 60" hub to hub. I'll be dropping in a stock 350 motor with a Turbo 350 ******, and custom drive shaft, along with this rear end. Does anyone know if this will work for my 54? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
I will fit no problem. I ran a rear from a S-10 4X4 in my 50. However, I'm not sure if you will like the 3.73's with a TH350. I would be looking for 3.42 or (even better) 3.08 gears. Todd
It should work fine.Move the spring pad's. Have an 88 Blazer 4X4 in my 57 chevy and my grandson and I put a 99 Blazer 4X4 in his 38 chevy truck that has a 51 chevy truck frame. The 99 came with disc brakes and the 88 has drums.
the 54 will not work with disc breaks if ur bagging the car just as a heads up... learn from my mistakes!
Funny I just made a call about cutting down a rear axil from an 85 chevy truck prob the same axil. I want to use it in a 1953-210. I have to lose 6" of width- my life story ha. Pyle bros in Baytown,tx is the place for rear ends in houston area. They charge 200 if it an empty rear end or 1100 turn key. The key they said is making sure the leaf/4- link is square after Weilding it up. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
If it's that much too wide it's a full size truck 10-bolt or larger rearend. I can go to a you-pick and buy a whole other rearend for $50 or so. There are plenty of choices the right width that will work -
HA HA yeah I just read that in another thread. I was thinking front kits (even though we were discussing the rear) good to know about those rears.
I still find it hard to believe a 60" rearend with Disc will not clear the frame. I am running a 56.5 (with drums) and it clears. how wide are those calipers.. someone must have a 4x43 disc brake rear laying around . what is the dimension between the calipers.
3:73 "used" to be the preferred street gear but if you're running at interstate speed and want any mpg to speak of then you want a taller gear.
I am running the exact same rear end that you are talking about. 3.73 gears and all BUT I am running a t5 ******. You do have to move the spring pads to center the axle. Later, ****
i wanna say that the frame is 47" wide and the clearance between the calipers is like 43.5".... id have to remeasure it but i think thats what i came up with. The calipers hang about 4 inches past the rotor so u have between 7-8 inches u loose between ur rear end. even the drum rear end is only about 1.5-2 inches from hitting the frame. Would have ben nice to use the rear end espI ecially since i already bought it lol but oh well u live and u learn
sweeden, thanks for the info. if the disk brake rearend is 60" wide and the clearance between the calipers is 43.5, that means the disk and calipers are about 8" wide per side. guess the drum rear is the way to go.
the disk rear is 59" wide from wheel mount to wheel mount. Yea unfortunatly i have to use the drum but itll work was just shooting for 4 wheel discs to say it had 4 wheel disc lol
