Heading out from central VA to upstate NY (Binghamton, just across the PA line) on Monday morning hopefully early start. Will be travelling I-81 and I'll be hard to miss in my year-round daily driver '49 1/2 T. Give me a heads up if you want to meet and have a coffee along the way. Mom's 88th birthday and a friends son's wedding have drawn me back to the home place. all the best to you and yours, Cosmo
Where in central NY are you going? I work in Oneonta and live about 10 miles from there. It's about 1/2 way across I-88 between Binghamton and Albany
Heading up to Binghamton, NY, on I81 from Charlottesville, VA on Thanksgiving Day. Daily driver only vehicle...coffee on I 81 somewhere? I'm hard to miss in a parking lot! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!!!
plan on some extra travel time.. I-88 is nothing short of junk..Road surface all busted. Enjoy the area.. be safe. Pa is always "under construction" at least for the last 10 years....
Yeah 81 sux. I live 5 minutes from exit 202 off 81 if you need anything.(about 45 minutes before Binghamton.
I enjoyed a trip in my 46 Plymouth heading out of PA to VA on US 15. Divided in lots of places, not a whole lot of traffic, but hard to follow through Harrisburg. Jumped on 81 for that strech, then got off and took us 11 to Bingo, except through Wilkesbury Scranton where we take the NE trnpk extension from Pittston to Clarks Summit.
Last fall when I came back north I ran US11 from Harrisburg to just below Wilkes-Barre. It was just about dead flat most of the way instead of all the hills on I-81 (you literally do nothing but go up hill for about 40 straight miles in that stretch), it's divided highway most of the way to Sunbury and while you p*** through towns and stuff from Sunbury east the traffic wasn't bad late at night. And if you did have a problem there was actual population, even hotels, all along there.
Good advice here. I've boiled up there in 7 and a half hours on 81 but it wasn't what I call 'fun'. I think I'll shoot to Harrisburg on 81 then hit 11, hop on 81 south of Wilkes-Barre, then 476 then 11 on in. Hope you guys comment on that. I run a '56 235 with a dual intake, Fentons and a '69 3sp+od so I can run down the road at 70, no problem, but I just love rural PA at 50 mph. Thanks, Cosmo
I just hate that damn stretch of nothingness, going up and up and up the hills. I81 through Scranton/Wilkes Barre is under perpetual construction, too.
A few years ago I was running that 'nothingness stretch of I-81' in my '49 going south when I was pulled over doing what I thought was 72 mph. Flashing blue lights and a big smile met me on the shoulder, turns out the guy was headed to a conference and recognized me or my truck from either here or The Stovebolt. Good guy.
There are three toll booths on the NE trnpk extension(476). they used to be 90 cents, think they recently went up to a buck. But less traffic, better road, and I think its 15 or so miles shorter. Just watch the northbound exit for Pittston. Its short and ends at a stop light. There are a couple restaurants and several choices for gas before you jump on the TRNPK. Real sharp turn before toll booths at Clark's summit, be aware the 20 MPH curve signs aren't far off. and you need to pick up 11 of US 6 so if the 11 signs don't show up, follow 6 west to 11n. Bing maps says Clarks summit to Bingo is 54 miles and 74 minutes. By the way Binghamton is regarded as being in the Souther Tier (hence rt 17 being the Southern Tier Expressway) Us central NY'ers consider the Syracuse area Upstate, ven though the NYC folks think we are in another country.
I just saw this thread and very cool truck and very awesome that you are driving it to NY on a long trip! I'm in Harrisonburg area.
Well 5 years later and headed up on Wednesday the 12th, anyone for coffee somewhere on route 11? Supposed to be some harsh weather, we'll see. Look for same truck, it's a daily driver only vehicle. Regards, Cosmo in the '49
