Found a very small piece of hot rod nostalgia

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Big A, Oct 3, 2005.

  1. Yeah, it did have a grill shell and a different carb set-up at one point or another, don't know if it was earlier or later.

Johnny also left my dad a set of Ardun heads for a V8-60. So if we replicate this car, should we go for the original '41 Merc, or the V8-60?

Gl*** might be the way to go. I don't think there's much chance of '32 roadster body that's anywhere near my snack bracket.

A replica is a copy in my eyes.
If it had a 41 Merc, I'd go for that, no matter what other cool stuff you might have lying around.
By the way did you see the posting about Arduns on here some days ago.
We also went over the baby Arduns.

Yoour baby Arduns could help finance your car.

If you insist on Having a pre war Merc block for your car, I got one lying around. (Original they where 3 3/16 Bore and have the t****ze shaped middel waterchannels on the deck, as you probably know.)
I guess shipping would cost a bit, but don't nag about it in front of us europeans ;)
We feed USPS and Fedex almost enough to get a Cristmas greeting from their directors each year.

You said: When I got the stuff home and sitting together I had a gl*** of scotch in my hand and I just stared at everything for a long time. Then I though, "I've got to build that damn car".

.....you are on your way here dude. BUILD IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  4. Thanks for the link to the Ardun thread, I'd missed that one.

I don't know a whole heckuva lot about pre-war anything. My '49 shoebox is the oldest car I've owned. I think I'll be going to HAMB school if I get into this build.

I'm having lunch with my father today (his 71st birthday... I guess I'm buyin'
    :D ). I think we'll kick this around.

AV8-Rider, I've got nothing but respect for all you EU guys. You're a pretty dedicated and talented bunch. I ***** about just getting parts over the Canada/US border, and that's nothing compared to what you boys contend with.

    Thanks BigA
We get by oK actually. But dedication is the motor, right about that. It's farly easy to build an old style car over here if you are'nt all that picky about period correct parts for your ride. But if you realy are into something special, like a narrow defined timeperiod for instance it gets a lot tougher. Believe me.

You can learn a LOT on here. I sure have. When starting a Flathead project there is an enourmus amount of knowledge to harvest from guys on the HAMB.

Below is a pic of the prewar Merc, 99 casting, I have extra. We had a lot of treads a couple of years ago regarding dating of blocks, etc etc etc.
    FUN

Have a nice time with your dad and be constructive making plans. Would realy be fun to see this car happen. I love stuff like this.
    Good luck on 'ya.

Another great, but perhaps obvious, tip is to stock up on the available litterture, when learning about pre 1950 hot rodding.
Montgomey, Genat, Drake.... buy all the books. You won't regret it a second if you don't have them already that is.
