I need help. I am installing a poossibly original rear window with a new rubber seal in a 42 Ford Fordor. Before I go to far, I was wondering if anyone has any tips, tricks or suggestions to make this an easy one or two man job??I have so far installed the seal in the opening then took it out and put it on the window just to make sure it fit both places properly. Afraid to mess either of them up I stopped there and came here to ask for help.
I believe 47 is the same and in that case, I put the rubber on the window, ran a "sash" cord in the lip of the seal. One guy held the window in the opening from the inside, and another guy started the lip on the steel lip on the body. Pulling the sash cord along the window seal, allowed the rubber to flip out on to the body. Sorry, it's hard for me to describe, but I'm sure google will help. Also a bit of liquid dish soap on the seal to lubricate the install.
I do completely understand what you're describing. I hadn't thought about the sash cord, plus i'm not sure what diameter cord that is. I was also pretty sure this was going to take more than one person. If you would describe little more what you're calling sash cord please. Thanks for the quick response too.
Just use strong string. We always put the gl*** and rubber in the hole from the outside, and pulled the string from the inside. Have a helper holding and pushing the window from the outside as you pull the string. Have the string ends meet in the center bottom of the gasket. Set the window/gasket with the bottom rubber in the pinch weld then work the string around the gasket as your helper pushes the gl*** in. Hope this makes sense.
Sash cord is strong string, as mentioned above. You'll see it in d****ry tracks, although you don't want the heavy stuff. On my 47, there is no rear garnish molding, the rubber of the window seal "finishes" the inside. The headliner glues to the inside opening where the window sits.
I did a '50 Fleetline rear window once by myself with a screwdriver, a bit at a time all the way around the gasket. The cord makes it a lot easier; it helps to have someone apply pressure on the gl*** as you pull.
the cord is the way to go. did it on my '49 merc. buy it at the local hardware store. you will figure out what size to get when you see their selection. a little "lube" on the rope helps too, maybe some dish soap.
two things that help lube the rubber before you start. and the ford gl*** goes inside and lips outside I use a 3/16 nylon rope and alway pull towards the center of the gl***. if you use a thinner cord and try to pull in the direction your going . you will have the chance of cutting the rubber
More HAMBster bad information. Install from inside. Venetian Blind cord is the correct size and strength for this operation. Regards, Ron
I got the rear windiw installed tonight. It makes the car look nicer just by being installed. Thanks for the rope tip, it helped quite a bit. The lube it tip helped a lot as well. As soon as the new wiring comes in I'll get it rewired.
rope on the outside. Make sure person inside keeps pressure on the gl*** but not too much as the seal lip you're pulling out can rip.
