I'm having a problem after installing new door weatherstripping. It's a 4 door and all the doors closed fine previously with the old stuff and after removing it. Have only done 3 doors so far and only one will fully close. The other 2 both front and rear passenger doors hit really hard and don't latch. Tried moving the post out as much as possible but not much there. I can see the post hits right where it should so somewhere things are binding but I just can't figure it out. Has anybody had this problem or have any tips?

The kit was ordered from Mercuryland and is made by Dennis Carpenter.

    Greatly appreciate any help.

  2. I have run into this with every project I've used Carpenter rubber on (51 Vicky, 50 Merc 2d, 53 F-100, 56 F-100, 57 Fairlane) and others. Seems the rubber is more dense than the stock stuff was. I have talked to them several times and they have some excauses but no fix. They will also tell you they will squeeze down over time. I'm still waiting. Sad part is there isn't a better choice out there.

  3. Sorry no help here Wizzard nailed it. Sadly i recently had to redo a high end paint job to use there rubber. I was told the same story about the squeeze down over time so i am doing a test for now over a year and its still to thick

  4. Here is something I've been doing for a while. Seems when the door closes the "New" rubber does not want to slide at the hinge side into correct place in the Jamb. To help I take a shop rag and load it up with silycone lube and wipe it on the rubber once a week. This kind of keeps it from bunching up before the door gets fully closed. It's not a Fix, just helps some. You would thing in today's world they could duplicate the rubber the same as it was 63 years ago,. But NO. Another option is to Razor Blade off a 1/16 on the mount side of the rubber. Not An Easy Task!! I've done that.

Thanks guys that is what I was afraid of. So is there a specific location that needs the trim?

Seems like the contact is all at the hinge side but can't really see. The top doesn't even seem to make contact. I also trimmed some of the u-shaped part already at the hinge but no help.

  6. It's not just one small place. It's the type of rubber itself that keeps it from compressing. If you think the door seal is a problem wait till you use there Vent Window seals. 5 years, and every time latch them I keep waiting for the Latch handle to brake off and I have to use both hands to close them. That's just plain Screwed.

Oh great I've just finished getting the rubber in place and I didn't like the look of it compared to what I took out. I need to find some super rubber lubricant I guess. :(

My neighbor happened to stop by and he said with the same problem on a 59 woody, he used a heater to soften up the seal then close the doors. I might have to try that soon.

Can you adjust the latch closer in with the striker all the way out to give you a bit more..

let us know if the heater trick works

  9. I don't understand this question.

As for a heat gun, I hadn't considered that being the sun and time are what destroys the weather strip in the first place. Well age for sure maybe not so much the Sun. I would think if Heat helped the Vent Windows on my Vicky would be closing better by now. Let me know how that works for ya.

Heat is for the door strip only to help soften. Don't think it would work on the vent rubber. Hope to try this by the weekend.
