Powerflite is too slow

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fat53Buick, May 26, 2013.

  1. Finished all work on my 55 Chrysler Windsor Deluxe. Yesterday at the test drive the car speed up very slow. it seems that it speed up in the 2nd gear and not in the first. when i shifting between D and L its the same cruise and speed. That must be wrong. i can´t imagine that the car is so slow. any idea whats the reason? Thank you guys

Sounds like your trans is not shifting out of low or perhaps it is starting out in high. What engine RPM do you have say at 35 MPH? High rpms at 35 would tell me the trans is in low gear. Lower rpms would tell of it being in high gear.

  3. its in lower rpm, the car allowed me not to come into high rpms. when i pull the pedal down or try to kickdown its speeds up like a tractor. when i am in N the engine runs great and its good on the pedal.

Get an adaptor from QEC & put a modern 727 behind it!

Here's one page of many that talk about adjustment of the PowerFlite. At the bottom of each page you can go to the next or previous page. I'm starting you out on page 26 because that's where your problem may be. This is for a 1953 PowerFlite, but the info in the manual for my 1956 is pretty much the same, so this should at least get you in the ballpark.
Also, it may be something as simple as your accelerator pedal not fully opening the throttle plates in the carb. An engine will rev pretty fast with the trans in neutral, even at just 20% opening. With the engine off, have someone hold the accelerator to the floor, and see if the throttle plates are opening fully.

I went through the same issue with mine. I tried the air trick and it did not help. I had to pull off the tail housing and clean the governor. Once I did that, it found low gear and shifts between both (although not by itself most of the time).
