    Hi gang,

I just spent some time crawling around under "endlessearth's" new '64 longbed yesterday and found it to be a pretty solid old truck. But, one of the things we do need to adress is rear springs. I know several companies offer drop springs for these trucks, but I have read here and several other places about using Jeep TJ springs. Anybody have any real world input about ride and carrying capacity using these springs? Anything would help...

Tj springs bolt right in but man they are super soft. They give about a 4 inch drop but you wont be able to carry much in the bed. I took them out . Super soft ride no load capacity

Thanks VNTGE41, that is what I was wanting (or not) to hear. he intends to put some hay in the back of this from time to time for his wife's horse.

Any body else have a similar or better experience?

    Chip,

you might want to explore first generation Grand Cherokee coils. Basically same setup but designed for a bit heavier loads.

Here are some specs from Moog on some springs. The CC means Variable rate, they have a soft range then get stiffer.

The installed height for each was calculated with the C10 load.

You could put the TJ springs in and some load leveler air bags and tune the ride for what ever is in the back.

  15. Ran TJ coils and Airlift bags to control the softness in a friend's '64 C10. Dropped down a good 4" and the bags with 5-10psi kept it firm enough for daily driving. Bumped up the pressure to carry anything over a couple hundred pounds in the bed.

Thanks guys! I hadn't thought about airlift bags, I guess this deal is kinda why they were created all those years ago.

As said above the TJ springs are about a 4" drop and soft. The main benefit is they are available FREE as takeouts from most 4x4 shops. I like the softer ride and just throw the stock springs back in for any major hauling. The airbags would also work well.

Tj Rubicon hardtop/automatic or lj (unlimited) in any configuration (rubi auto hardtop would be best) for tj/lj springs with a little more weight capacity.

    Hey gang,
Had to bump this up again as I got to slide under this truck today and start doing some measuring. Doing some more searches on this stuff I'm seeing notes of TJ, FJ, LJ, ZJ, etc. I guess part of the problem is - I don't speak Jeep! I wouldn't know what an FJ Jeep product was if it ran over me. Must come from a life led driving everything 3" off the ground... Someone above suggested Grand Cherokee first gen, would that by nature be a heavier spring? And what year range would be considered first gen? And what would it's "J" designation be? And, last but not least, are all of the Jeep springs the same double pigtail design that will basically drop into the C10 application so I can just sit to my book and look at installed heights? Sorry for the batch of questions, but my spring book doesn't have the various "J" demarcations for these products, and a bit confused.

Last little request for you guys running Jeep rear springs under C10s - If you have minute or two under your truck this weekend, can you Measure the installed height of your springs and note what model designation they are from? I think this could be a valuable resource to anybody down the line that might end up trying to do this stuff blind like me.

Ask me damn near anything about a '09 - '48 Ford and I can probably rattle off two ways of doing it and the part numbers to get it done, but these things are a whole different ball park for me.

    Thanks gang, Chip

the dropped springs they all sell are 80's monte carlo springs. SS models had a higher spring rate, hope that helps.

Ha ha..."it's a jeep thing..." OR better yet..."it's a hotrod thing, you wouldn't understand."
TJ=97-06 Wrangler...very plentiful stock takeouts from lifts.
    ZJ=93-98 Grand Cherokee
