So many problems on my last few items to complete. I don't have a good feeling about my clutch after putting it back together. The pedal is sticking halfway up on the return and it doesn't seem to turn much when I engage the pedal. Could this just be an adjustment problem or something more serious? I had the tranny off and replace the clutch disc during my project. Everything seemed fine when it went in until pushing the pedal that is.
Well no replies yet so shameless bump for some input. Haven't had time to dog into this, but I'm hoping to get some suggestion still. Merc lovers I know you're out there.
That's what I was thinking at first but the pedal spring seems ok. Maybe its not pulling hard enough. Not sure how strong it is supposed to be though either. I believe there is an internal spring as well. Is that the one you are talking about? I just got the engine and tranny back together though so hoping I don't have to take it off again.
Your pedal spring is the only spring. Your bearing on the fork of the tranny shaft that pushes against the clutch may be sticking or try replacing the bushings. C&G Early Ford sells all of the bushings needed for dirt cheap. Good Luck.
Thanks for the replies guys. I don't think the pedal is binding, it only takes slight pressure to pull it back up when it sticks. Also I replaced the pivot bushing when putting it back in and fully greased it. Seemed to be really smooth motion. jfrolka, cgford actually has 2 different bushings listed for the 49 Merc. Would I need 2 of them? One has a picture and the other doesn't. Has either of you adjusted the clutch on a Merc or ford? I was hoping a pedal adjustment might be the answer, but I've never done it and not sure what effect a mis-adjustment would have.
Yes you need 2 of the part#7517 bronze bushing cup, and its a 2 piece clam shell that goes into the end of the equalizer tube which is cupping a pivot ball stem. Anti-seize it up real good when installing. Your adjustment comes from a clevis type end joint on the pedal to that equalizer tube. Thats it for adjustment. Too much or less adjustment just toys with your engagement and disengagement position on the pedal. I LOVE these little merc transmissions, tore mine apart and built it all back up with enjoyment. Very easy to do yourself, only hard part is the pesky clip with little cover on the top of the tailshaft housing.
Ahhh I did already replace that bushing, the old one was broken. I also got a new rubber washer to seal it and greased it up before reinstalling. Hoping I don't have to rebuild the tranny at least not yet. Sounds like a good winter time project after I get this thing on the road for this summer.
Your clutch fork bearing probably needs a good dose of penetrating oil sprayed on it. Mine was pesky till I soaked it really good then the pedal was smooth like butta!
I'm following this thread. Getting ready to put a new master cylinder in my 49 car. Have to hook up all the clutch stuff again... Keeping my fingers crossed.
