Just picked up this 1928 Model A Coupe. Older resto, no rust, runs great, paint a little funky. Not sure what to do with her yet....probably hit the paint next week...a little wet sanding to smooth out the runs, and a quick polish. I really dig the oval fog light and the spot light. Also have the original 1928 plates with it. Hmmmm....hot rod the banger? Pop in a flatty? Maybe a nice little 283? Get it out of the clouds? Leave it and putt around? I am sure you will all chime in. Any way ya look at it, I dig it! I will post a few more pictures....
Nice, if it was my car. I would just lower it, hop up the banger, and take the muffler off. Then drive the hell out of it. But it's not, so pay no attention to me. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Drive the banger for awhile and get the feel for the stocker. Then make some changes : Drop the axle, convert to some juice brakes, change the wheels and tires and drive it some more. You'll be amazed at the improvement, even though the investment won't seem like much. When you're ready, you'll know what you want. Just practice on something else to get your welding, fabricating and painting skills honed to do the project right.
Maybe its just me, but I'd drive it while I built a rolling ch***is for it (probably deuce), with engine trans, rear, steering etc. Complete roller ready for the body, you know? Painted and everything. Then do your body work and paint and sell your stock junk to a restorer. Sent using the NEW Droid HAMB app from atop my toilet.
It sure looks a lot like what I started with. Just lowered mine using a 35 front axle and 35 wire wheels. Have fun building it your way...
Very nice! I am interested on how to get these down in front and rear w/out tearing the whole car apart (if possible)...Good luck, I will be following along.
For all of you guys with a stock A and dont know what to do: After you drive it a little, and learn how slow it is, get a 7:1 high compression head. This is the most bang for your buck. After shifting that awful transmission for a while (and hating it) step up to the 84-87 F150 conversion. 3 fully synchronised gears with Overdrive, now you are in heaven and its time to learn how to stop. 39-48 Ford brakes were better than stock but are ****py compared to self adjusting, self energizing Bendix brakes. You can start that with 39 Lincoln backing plates from Wilson Welding and NEW 1940 drums. Add a dropped axle with 35 wire wheels and you have a TRUE Traditional Hot Rod that can be driven daily thru several states myA by farmgate, on Flickr
Thanks manyolcars, this is the kind of stuff I need to learn! After the above mods what sapped can u comfortably cruise at? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I also have electronic ignition with a points distributor in the trunk, ready to go just in case and some other go fast modifications. I havent gone over 75 mph but have driven a 300 mile trip keeping it at 65 most of the time. (plus 300 home) I disliked the rumble seat and converted to a trunk then put a dropped floor back there for lots more space nightshot by farmgate, on Flickr
