Projects Slant six tunnel ram for the Senior Dragster

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Dolmetsch, Mar 14, 2012.

  1. Seems like a long time ago I started making the tunnel ram for the Senior Dragster. Then I stalled getting the Welding done. An old friend John Bailey o/op of Noronco Sheet Metal Co called a couple of weeks ago and asked if I had it done. NOT. He stopped by an hour later, numbered all the parts and took it to his shop. He called today to say come and get it. It was done. I still have some rubbing to do on it but here is a bottom view which tells the most of how it is built of it sitting on my new cylinder head for the car that I am making up reworked sbc Chev stainless valves for.
Also Chris at comp made me a custom grind cam to my specs which I installed this week. I will run in the lifters and lobes on the old head and springs then swap it all over.

Looking good. Is there a formula for the volume of the plenum?

That looks really interesting. I like trying to make/modify manifolds and ignitions but I rarely get anything completed. Good luck. Tom.

  6. What type of carburation is going on that bad boy?

  7. A pair of Holley 500 2bbls.
I was much more concerned with tuned length then plenum volume specifically. I did come up with a formula but it is long gone now. It related to volume of one cylinder but the main purpose of a plenum is it allows fluid (air is a fluid) to make turns at high angles and still maintain high efficiency. Otherwise any turn over about 8 degrees produces a large drop in flow no matter how pretty the shape is. My Paw an engineer gave me a book on The Study of Fluid Dynamics when he retired and cleaned out his office library. Some of these things I learned from that book, others from PE Irvings writings such as Tuning for Speed and so on. I got to put a lot of the stuff into practice over the last 40+ years of working and racing and SO FAR have been very surprised at the results. Anyway I still have a lot of work to do till it is ready to run but it is a long ways from where I started thanks to my friend John B and his crew at Noronco who came and took my handmade parts and welded them together stamping each part with a matching number here as I showed him how it was designed to fit. . And he did it as a friend too. No gold. Great guy!

  10. Back working on the /6 Tunnel Ram. Have the header stubs all made and the retainer plates welded in. Reworked the final port entry in the manifold to conform to the head exactly for the intake runners. I poke away at it for an hour or so. I have to finish the headers now and make the linkage brackets and such.

How soon before you get some runs on it, Don?

  12. I am thinking by our sept Picton Airfield race I should have it running well. I am working away at it steadily a bit every week day. Usually that approach works well for me.

  14. Don,
you wouldn't happen have an extra slant six manifold wall hanger that would work on a street car?

  15. Nothing Streetable. A super six 2 bbl reworked for a Holley two barrel works well . Also a 2gc rochestor carb does good there.
    Cool car BTW.
