Gm bellhousing bolts

  1. Quick question. What bolts should I use to mount a 350 chevy engine to a engine stand?

Use bolts of the proper diameter, thread pitch and thread depth. Use bolts long enough the ensure engagment, but no long enough to "bottom". You will likely need flat washers under the hex end of the bolts. Not sure I understand the question. Can you be more specific?

I'm trying to remember if sbc uses 3/8 bolts or 7/16, but in any event, just buy some grade 8 bolts that are long enough to go through the tubes in the mounting plate of the engine stand, and that extend out about 3/4 to 1 inch more. Put washers on the ends of the bolts where they touch the tubes to make them more secure and easier to turn.

I like to bolt the mounting plate to the motor while it is laying on the floor and then I pick up the whole thing and slide it into the engine stand base. So much easier than trying to get those bolts started while the engine is suspended and swinging around on the lift.

Even Ace Hardware and Lowes sells grade 8 bolts of various lengths. Grade 8 might be overkill, but I don't take chances where my toes are concerned.

SBC uses 3/8" bolts length depends on your stand

You certainly don't need Grade 8 bolts to hold up an engine.

  6. and those 3/8" bolts have a co**** thread , as in 16 threads per inch

Like I said, overkill, but they don't hurt and I feel more secure when I am flipping that motor over, especially when it is a big block Olds or something similar. I was moving a 454 Chevy block by rolling it on an engine stand one time and the wheel caught and bent the mounting plate so the engine was pointing down at a 45 degree angle, but the grade 8 bolts held. I just overbuild everything I do.:D

  8. My feet like it better when I'm moving one around on the stand.

Dunno if I would use grade 8, if something were to go wrong, the harder material will break, instead of bending.

^^^^I Agree^^^^ grade 8 is strong but brittle on the bend, be careful. Got steel toe boots?

I pick up grade 8 bolts at the local machine shop who sells them pretty reasonable for my engine stand because the two places in town that sell bulk grade 5 bolts have no indicators as to where the bolts come from. I'd rather worry about the slim to none chance of a grade 8 bolt shearing off than worry about any one of a number of things happening with the bulk grade 5 bolts.

  13. Thanks guys for all input. I was really concerned about the thread type on the block. Fyi I always grade 8. Just feels safer. Kustoms rule!!!
