Was out going to garage sales this weekend when I came upon a sign pointing to a business park. Seems an auto repair shop/ towing service was moving because the landlord doubled the rent. Like a swap meet inside. Guy was cleaning out before the move after years of ac***ulation. Browsing around I found the late model molar tilt column. $40. Mentioned to the guy owner that It would be nice to have the wiring harness to plug into. He said it was out in the dumpster ready to go to s****. Went out and dug it out and found the S.S. 17" steering wheel. He said out of a truck. $2. The tilt will go into my 48 Plymouth this winter. Don't know what I will do with the wheel but it would look great on a speedster or something.
In your search for parts don't forget about garage sales.

cool find. I go dumpster diving every weekend in my apartment complex, people move out all the time and leave stuff. 2 weeks ago I found a Snap On work bench. fit perfect in my garage. I`d like to see pictures of your 48 as well.

Hope you like it. 283,350,9". T.J. upholstery. In an effort to make it '50s '60s style I installed a '55 Cad steering column. Updating it now. This winter I will install the late model Mopar tilt and air. I wasn't happy with the dash paint so I will redo it then too.

If you are driving around and see a garage sale, if there is a set of tires or wheels on the lawn there is a strong chance they have more car goodies you can't see, so it's a good one to stop at.

If you see nothing but racks of clothes and tables of knick knacks, p***.

    And you wouldn't own a 17" S.S. 4 spoke steering wheel.

I think some people are confusing a garbage dumpster from a s**** dumpster. I would pay the $2 either way, but the s**** dumpster is stuff the owner is selling to a s****yard, not going to the trash heap.

You are 100% correct. He gave me the wire loom that went with the MOPAR tilt that he had thrown in the s**** dumpster and while we were untangling it I spotted the steering wheel. I was still in the process of of looking through the stuff he had for sale.

Then again some people just have to be smart ***!

I would have done the right thing, too. Love those 4-spokers, found a REAL 17" narrow spoked Bell Auto 4-spoker at Turlock a few years back...it was new, still sitting in the guy's pickup bed.
I asked, he responded. "Think that's one of those old Western Auto junkers, give me $3."

Great score on the steering wheel. Nice looking Plymouth too.

However, seems a shame to me to take out a '55 Cadillac steering column and put in that big bulky plastic 1980's unit. Even with a different steering wheel, that would stick out to me as a fat old man street rod part, like high back bucket seats or an LED 3rd brake light or a CD player cut into the dash.

Not trying to be a **** or anything, to each his own, just wanted to throw that out there.

Pays to get there early while they are still unloading. That would have gone quick if put out.

I hear what you are saying and I haven't done it yet. The original build was pure '50s. Generator, stock brakes, manual steering, Cad. custom stuff. Since then I have been upgrading things as I get older and lazier. First front power disks. Then power steering and alternator. Now this winter I plan to pull the dash for repaint (first time didn't turn out well. I'm a better painter now) and air. While I have it apart I'll see how bad this steering looks and if I can live with it. What I really need is a tilt with a square wheel out of a '60s Mopar. Thanks for the constructive criticism though.

Damn, I didn't know you had a '48 too! When ya gonna stop messing around at yard sales and get some work done on that Falcon? Great score on the steering wheel! I also have one just like it. I think Grant made them.

Yeah Chip I got a lot of projects. Cad. powered '48 Ford with the engine apart too.Without going into details that nobody wants to hear I've been sidetracked by other projects and some heart trouble. What I need to do is just take the Falcon somewhere and have it painted and upholstered.

Sooo... digging through the dumpster got you a nice steering wheel for 2 bucks... since it was garbage anyway... why did you get charged? Shouldn't it have been free? Isn't that public domain?

    nice score regardless.

Still don't think you get it. The dumpster belonged to the guy with the sale. It was where he was throwing his s**** iron.
