I was reading about the candy red paint on John D'Agostino's '51 Lincoln and how it has a gold base with silver in the highlight areas. I never thought about blending the basecoat like that. I was wondering if a real small flake would still sparkle through the candy. Anyone ever play around with it?

Yes, that's the whole idea of candy...a transparent color layer over a metallic base. The metallics shine up through the color coats, which gives it it's amazing depth.
BUT...the more coats of candy you put on, the more you diminish the effect of the base metallic. Try to stick to 3-6 with urethanes, or 6-12 with lacquer.

Thanks but I didn't mean metallic. I meant metal flake.

Im not a painter but i'd say yes, because flake goes in the clear not the color.

when in dought spray a test panel or fender, I had Orion silver metallic, with gold metal flake, and 6 layers of oriental blue candy on my bike, It turn out cool. The gold turns a little aqua in the light because the blue candy and yellow gold turns greenish if you add to much blue layers. Just go mix paint and spray some test panels until you get the effect you like.

Last time I checked, metal flake was just a larger version of metallics.

If you had to deal with "some" customers like I do, you start to develop a bit more patience, Nads. Just like the patience you had when working on your Caddy concept car.

I'm not sure if this is a serious question.

If it is, the answer is yes.................

Metal flake gets mixed into the clear. I'd say that's very different from metallic paint.

  16. Yes it will show thru- how much depends on the concentration of candy and the number of coats.

  17. Not always, it can be used as a base. Then the candy is applied over it followed by a clear.

Gotgas has posted what metalflake as a base looks like.

  18. I think what Zombie 51 ment was the flake gets mixed into the clear or intermediate coat. You should have a base coat, intermediate coat with flake, then Kandy coat, followed by a clear. Or at least that is one way to apply it. Maybe thrown a coat or two of clear inbetween the other coats to protect it depending upon time.

    Now we're getting somewhere.

  20. Think of the kandy as if it would be the tint on a window. The more layers of tint the darker it is but you can still see what's on the other side of the gl***.
