Just wondering would it be cheaper to fly out to SD (air fare 650) or have it hauled.Owner says hes driven it 800 miles recently. Thanks
I used www.agapetransport.com just quoted me $1215 for a 40 merc from Man***as to southern Utah. I never needed them this time but the moved a Bimmer for me in 2011 and I was very satisfied with the service. I would think shipping would be way less expensive.
There are 3 quality transporters here on the Hamb. BenD, Racinman & myself. We all have adds in the Hamb O Dex section (the only place to find a transporter because you can see feedback/references from other Hambers) Give any or all of us a call or P.M. Stay away from U****, you will be bombarded with brokers calling you for weeks & chances are good if you actually get your vehicle undamaged, the driver won't speak english & will not care about any kind of schedule of when you want it delivered
If you search for threads on auto transport or shipping you will quickly find you get what you pay for with transporters. They can show up damaged and you have little recourse. But the big thing is usually the people you call are just a broker - they contract out the haul, and the car goes from terminal to terminal for a portion of what you pay, resulting often in there not being enough left to take the car to the final destination for a long time, particularly if it's to be delivered to your door. As for what it will cost you to drive back, you're going to need to know about what fuel milage it gets - get directions from Google Maps for the total miles and figure an average fuel cost around $4 a gallon. Then figure a Motel 6 or something if not every night than at least every other night and your meals. My guess is it will cost more, my old beater van that gets 15 MPG cost about $250 to go 800 miles or so, but I took my time and made a bit of an adventure each way and enjoyed myself. With a car like this you may also want to figure bouncing off a Harbor Frieght or Sears for a good basic tool kit and buy a few spare parts so that if you do have a problem you have a shot at fixing it yourself at least enough to limp somewhere for real repairs.
EVERYONE needs to drive across the USA at least once, I did it in a '56 Ford pickup the first time. If you have the time that is what I'd do, if not call a HAMB hauler. Bob
Is the car represented as being able to make the trip ? It just might make it if you have the time it takes for a cross country road trip .... Get AAA Roadside ***istance & a complete tool kit before you hit the road You might see if a HAMBer is going your way: @ http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?groupid=214 You can also do a keyword search here using ' transport ' or ' haul ' to see if a member might be headed your way. Good Luck ! Jim
You can probably fly to SD for less than $650, price round trip tickets, they're often cheaper. Just don't use the return flight Southwest also flies out of Newark too... I'd say $1500 or better to have someone haul a car back to Jersey, that's for someone I would TRUST. There's a big difference between the guys I use to haul OT wholesale used cars and a car that I care about. Driving will cost more but will be way more fun, if the car has current CA registration, you're good to go. If not, get the ***le and a pic of the VIN plate and fly out with NJ plates which is what I've done before. But if you DO have it shipped I'd take what Bills Auto Works says to heart. I've not had the pleasure of using Bill or BenD but I did use Racinman Rick and he was fantastic. I deal in cars for a living and hate transporters usually, these guys are the serious exception to the rule.
I only use Intercity Lines and have used them many, many times. I learned years ago that the cheap date ends badly when shipping a car. Intercity just does everything right and treats your car with kid gloves.
800 miles is a lot less than the 2800 mile trip. I would be worried making that trip in any car over 5 years old.
agreed. i've done this a few times. both alone in a car and on tour with my old bands. its a great experience. however with an older car i would definitely have AAA platinum service, and budget a few extra days no matter what to cool down/check over the car/plan for breakdowns.
I'll just say that I had Bill haul a car from Concord, NH to my home in central PA. He was very reasonable, fast, friendly and efficient. I could not be happier with my experience. But, he's right-check out the haulers in the Hambodex. It's a long haul that you're asking for and it will need to be figured in on how you value the car.
good post...have held the top bid since Tuesday - might need a quote....it's in Kentucky and I'm in TX....
On that tv show about top bidders for moving they try to cram as much **** in there tailors as they can.I would never use them. Like said on here before ,you get what you pay for.I had a nice 40 ford shipped from Denver to NY by exotic transporters .Very professional .They charged $ 1,800 with no problems. Just remember if you drive the car you have to add gas $ to the plane ticket and hope nothing goes wrong.
