Hot Rods Opinions wanted- Wheel/tire color combo....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Dan Hay, Jun 13, 2013.

  1. The tires and wheels have been decided... 40 Ford 16X4's with 550's up front and 750's out back.

    Here's what I can't decide:
    1. Wheel color (currently gloss black)

    2. Whitewalls or blackwalls? I like both, I just can't decide.

Keep in mind- they are going on this car, and it will be driven for several years in the current surface rust/brush paint motif.

    GO!:)

I think whitewalls on black rims and no hub caps would compliment that great patina...

Black walls please! I hate wide white... Black on the wheels always looks classy and cool, and always will. I like some color though, and for allot of years a good buddy of mine has used School bus yellow as a wheel color on black or patina cars, and I LOVE it! Another favorite is Ford Wimblton White, which is a good cream color that really makes a Ford 16" wheel "POP", especially when it's very low. Weird thing is it makes the wheel look a couple sizes larger, and the body a bit more compact, too. My last suggestion would be a bright green that is just a touch "greener' than ford's 'Apple Green" from the model "A" era. We did this on a buddies black primered '34 Pickup about twenty years ago and I've bee waiting to build something it would work on again since.

  5. I think black walls cause the white seems turn brown on the white side walls. I like a trim ring only. You can't go wrong on the 40 anyway.

    Take notes from Ryan's 38!!!

  7. I know he's re-doing it. Does it still have the whites/black wheels/caps?

I forgot to mention, as for caps, IF I run caps I'll use 47-48 Merc.

Blackwall tires are fine, but IMO, black wheels and black tires are a non starter. Paint the wheels a contrasting color. The off white, tan, yellow etc. suggested above are all far better choices than black.

On the other hand, if you do choose whitewalls, then black wheels look good.

  10. I have trouble with a rod having an old crusty patina riding on perfectly clean wide whites and polished shiny rims  I like both just not together.

  11. It's by necessity rather than choice. Paint will be coming, but much later.

Blackwalls on steelies with or without poverty caps screams "all business hot rod".
    Like a moonshine runner's car. That's what I'd do.

I think blackwalls would look great, whether you stay with gloss black wheels or another color.

Black walls, trim ring and baby moons. It'll look like a car that's cool, waiting to be cooler.

Completely agree. Look at this Impala, from more that a few feet away you cant tell where one ends and the other begins. The rear end looks huge and goofy.

With all due respect, the back end IS huge.

  18. Black tires on tan steelies with 40 center caps..no trim rings. I liked the look on my old O/T chevy shortbox.

  19. I'm a fan of the black wheels, blackwalls, trim rings and caps. I think that trim rings are the ONLY thing I'd add to this one.

Yeah, but that Impala has flat black or primered wheels which blurs the line between the wheels and the tires. Gloss black would help. And maybe some chrome nuts or hubcaps.

I like the business look of blackwalls on black wheels. Depends on the car and the intended look though.

I agree about whitewalls and patina clashing. Whitewalls and primer, not so bad. What color do you plan on eventually painting the car? And how long before you do? Black goes with everything if you don't know what color you'll paint it. If it's gonna be a real long time before you paint it, maybe do the wheels and tires according to what it's gonna look like in its first form. By the time you paint it, it'll be time for new tires and new paint on the wheels anyway.

Black wheels, and either whitewalls or blackwalls would look good.

BUT whatever you do, run bias plies. not radials...

Black wheels, no caps or rings, whitewalls.

But if you do blackwalls, then again no caps or rings. And use some big-arse cad plated lug nuts.

This is a tough but important question in my mind. Dad ran 6.00 16 bias plys on this Merc for decades with either porta walls or wide whites. He went with these radials (215 70 16s I think) for improved handeling. They are somehow better than the white walls, but something is still missing and I can't quite figure out what it needs?

Black walls with either dark oxblood wheels or dark forest green wheels.

I am building a similar ride, mine '40 is factory blue and the paint is showing it's age, I do not plan on painting her any time soon...... I want to run bigs and littles, 235/75-15 out back and 155/80-15 in the front, (I make no apology for running radials) as far as wheels goes I am thinking Artillery wheels painted Ducati Super light Yellow (fly yellow) with '34 flat caps, I am on the fence as far as trim rings..... It is that or Radirs which are hard to find and costly when you do. Either way I am running black walls.

    naaaa......I am no sheep!!!!!
