I am running original type bias tires and dog dish caps on my '63 Biscayne now, and am very happy with the look. However, I kinda want the handling of radials instead, as I usually don't run interstates, and like the older scenic roads when I do cruise around... I am close to buying a set of chrome smoothies with small chrome caps to use as an alternate...as well as just a change once in a while..but not positive I will really like the look/vs maybe some Keystones, or others. Can anyone post some picture of yours for me ? Especially on Chevy's close to my Biscayne in year.. Thanks much... Cheers... (Here is how it looks now, as well as a picture of the Chrome wheels)
Hub caps???? How old are you? Lol... that thing is screamin' for a bit of rake and chrome reverse wheels....IMHO. Really nice Biscayne!!!!!
....just to clarify, I am (69) years old, hence to old time look... But I kinda like your idea of a slight rake with the Chrome wheels... Tks..
I put smoothies on my GP also a 63, wishing I went with Supremes but they work for now. here's a pic from the garage crawl in Austin
Thanks much, I appreciate all the pics...especially the Chevy's and the photo shop !! I kinda like the look, but will stay with black wall tires if I do this... Cheers......
UPDATE: I darn near bought chrome and smoothies, but last minute found a nice old set of Torq Thrust wheels... Need a good cleaning, but I am liking them a lot... NEW QUESTION: From some of the comments posted here, I am thinking of lowering the front a bit to go with this different look... Have a line on some real nice used tires at a great price, but always get screwed up on the modern radial size system....(Yah, I am 69 years old) The sizes I am looking at are 205/70R14's for the rear, and 215/75R14's for the front... Any suggestions on how that may look...If I understand the new charts correctly, the 205's are 25.3" tall and the 215's are 26.7" tall...I also realize the rears will be a bit fatter, which I like too... The wheels are 6".. Thanks much... OH,and for you old duffers, I will keep my old Bias tires/reversed wheels and dog dish's so I can change back and forth if I choose too. Cheers...
Here's mine, as purchased with smaller blackwalls and baby moons, and now with bigger pinner whites and shannon cones. i know its not even close to the same body style, but its good reference material.
your planned use of the "tire deal" does not sound right. shorter tires should be in front. some times cheap is not always better, especially for tires.
if you look at the pics i posted of my 57 earlier in this thread you get the visual. the top pic with the black walls are 205/70-14 the pic with the whites are 245/75-14 the 205s didn't fill the wheel house the way i liked. the 215s ride nicer. both sets are on the same wheels. 14x6 here's a couple more for reference:
The P215/75R14's are a standard replacement tire for a '63 Chevy full-size. They equate to the old 8.00-14 size. The 205/70R14 equates to the old 7.00-14 size. Not sure that wud look too good. You might want to look for some 225/70R14s which also equate to the old 8.00-14s but a little wider. Might look a little better.
the 205/70 is too small. 225/70 is too wide. the 215/75 is just right, but i could only find one brand (hankook) that i could get at a local place. its an odd size. none of the big chain places carried it in any brand. its a nice tire and i've put them on a bunch of cars, but i wanted more of an 'american' profile, without all the stuff on the sidewall. all that being said, i'm happy with the purchase.
Great info, as always...and thanks much, I s****ped the tire deals, but did buy the Torq Thrust wheels...and will follow the good advise above... and that '57 Chevy looks great !!
be prepared for rust, it seems no amount of wax will prevent the inevitable on these cheepies. Sorry. we even had a set of american racing smoothies go rusty in 12 months before they got on the car so they are now blasted and powdercoated.I know you can not see them too well but its very common.
