Hello to everyone! Im new to the H.A.M.B hoping to get some advice on an old project I finally decided to get started on. My Grandfather bought me a 64 Fairlane 500 260 V8 for my 14th birthday. over the years the motor and ****** have unfortunatly both taken a dump on me. I have decided to make the car a nice street cruiser, maybe lower a lil and some new wheels. Ive been looking at putting a 5.0 with an AOD ****** in it since I know it bolts in pretty easy. Just looking for any other ideas anyone may have on motor and ****** combos, or what 5.0 and ****** I should look for. I am aiming for maximum fuel economy and dependability. Any and all ideas and advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys!!!!!

For ease of installation I don't think you can do better than the 5.0 / AOD combo. You may want to consider changing to a carb and an aftermarket dizzy or Duraspark for a less complicated changeover. Try to find Granada disk brakes for the front.

Welcome to the HAMB and cool project ya got ahead of you. No Ford expert here, but I do know a warmed-up 289 will absolutely just fall into place and make plenty of power. You'd want to see what OD type trans might fit and look at rear end ratios to work towards your mpg goal. July 2013 Hot Rod magazine has several articles on 5.0 Coyote swaps into '66 Mustang, '86 Fox Body Mustang, '56 T-Bird, and '57 Fairlane and has an extensive list of suppliers for aftermarket/OEM parts. Best of luck...

If you want a lot of fun, go with a stick. If you just wanna slide into D and go, find an AOD. My Comet was a 260/3-on-the-tree, swapped in a 68 302 and 69 Toploader.

With the AOD you will have to do some crossmember work I'm pretty sure. If you go manual gotta find the pieces for all that. A T-5 is another option for fun plus MPG.

I would go with carb over the EFI for the look or if ya can find one of the new EFI systems that will fit under the air cleaner.

But I'll tell ya what, my 302(round 300hp, decent cam) with a 525cfm carb pull great outta the box and got some decent mpg, about 17mpgs with 3.00:1 rears and easing her up up to 55. Just now I gotta get the car back together after years of procrastination.

A late model roller cam 302 (5.0) with a T5 would be great in your car. Depending on your budget, you can put a cam in it, aftermarket heads, intake, and carb... and really wake it up.

Ford Motorsports did/does have, I believe, 'A' 'B' 'E' 'Z' roller cam grinds. Mild to wild. You get em for cheap and since theyre rollers, you cam get em used for really cheap.

I bought a 91 Lincoln LSC for 800.00 drove it home and used the 302 H.O. and AOD out of it. Did some minor trans X-member fabrication and adapted the F.I. T.V. cable to my intake and started driving it. With 4:11 gears it gets 17 mpg and is more fun to cruise now.
