OK. So the motor is a 54 Chevy straight 6 in a 51 Chevy car.

Everything was fine until I went to pull my car in the garage tonight. I push the starter button and the starter cranks and cranks even after I let the button go. I had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop.

My first thought was the starter button. So I disconnected the exciter from the starter and just used a big screwdriver to start it. It still does it!

I think that maybe the solenoid has gone bad, Is there anyway that I can fix it? I really need to be able to get my car in the garage. It has no windows in it and I really dont want it stolen. And of course its just me and I have a steep driveway.

    Please help.

Sounds like you have a stuck solenoid or there is something shorting it out between the Battery cable and start post.
Not sure about the ol Chevys but that is where I would start.

    Good luck

Whats a BENDIX? and how do I unstick it. Also, I hope you are not refering to the Bendix brand of electrical problems.

The Bendix is the gear drive that is inside the starter. You have to pull the starter to get to that one.

Anyone else have any ideas for me. I need to be able to pull my car into the garage to remove the starter.

It is a manual tranny. I could either bump start it, or just use the starter to drive into the garage, unfortunatly the drivweway is steep.

A stuck bendix will not allow the car to keep cranking once the starter switch/button is released. You need to address the solenoid problem. As for getting it in the garage, how about another car pushing it in? Huh?

How hard should I tap it? and where in it should it be tapped?

And pushing it into the garage is almost impossible because of a big dip at the street.

    Tap on the metal........
Not hard enough to dent it but lightly........if no results..a little harder.....no results....then fairly hard......after all....it already is broken.... :)

So I tap it on the silver body of it, not the ends. Correct?

If the battery is low or you have a ground problem it will cause the solenoid to stick.

It has never been a problem before, so I dont think its a ground thing.
