Is there a way to visually ID a 302 ford motor from a 351? If not what's the easiest WAY? Thanks, Fred
There are multiple ways to tell the difference, but you really need to have some baseline of familiarity. For example, 351W, 351C, 400/351M (which some will argue doesn't really exist). Deck height is one way, with the 302 being shorter, which means the intake sits higher on the 351s compared to the 302/289s. There again you need a baseline to be able to tell the difference. With the 302s the intake sits just slightly above where the distributor mounts, while on the 351s it is taller by a good half inch or so. Damn, it's been so long... for the most part 351s are a noticeably larger engine, head styles are different, etc, etc. But a simple search returns this! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=93054 Mike
The 302 intake is noticably narrower than the 351, once you see both of them the difference in intake width will stick with you.
Easy and quick,351 has about 1" space between water pump and deck 302 waterline is at deck where heads meet block.
