I'm trying to find info on the correct trim and emblems for my 'new' 62 Fairlane 500. Specifically, the 'Ford' emblem on the hood. I see pics of them with and without this emblem and wonder what is correct for mine. The owner's manual shows it with, but I want to be sure. It's a 4-door Town Sedan Challenger 221 with FordoMatic 2-speed. From what I've read the 221 was only offered early in the production year before being replaced by the 260 mid-year. I've researched the VIN number but can't find a definitive source online. The Internet's become a big electronic ebay/amazon shopping mall, but I'm sure this info is available somewhere... Is it possible to find out how the car was delivered? And whether it's numbers matching?
Actually, the 'Challenger' name was introduced mid-year in conjunction with the 260 engine change. Looks like they were just called 'Town Sedan' early on.
Thanks for the pics hoop98. All of these have the emblem, but I'm seeing a lot of pics without it, too. I wonder if the emblem was added for the mid-year 260 'Challenger' model, but not with the 221? The emblem looks nice, but I'd like to keep it right, and they're hard to find...
Ok, thanks again. I'll keep looking. These parts have gone outta sight since the EPA made auto salvage yards get rid of their older cars. Shame really...
Numbers matching is a Corvette thing. ONLY. AFAIK, very few to no manufacturers actually numbered their engines to their cars. And for sure, it would make no difference at all to any four door sedan. Including mine, in which I have no interest in even looking at the numbers. Of course, when people finally realise that Falcons are far better cars than Corvettes, maybe I'll care some more... As far as the emblems goes, for me, it's what looks good, and/or what I have on hand/can find easily. But then, I didn't join this group to restore anything more than my faith in the human hot rodder. Since joining, I think the only thing I've restored is a George Foreman grille. No, strike that, I used a longer, aftermarket cord. I confess, however, that I faked the numbers on the cord...so it's still numbers-matching to the unwashed heathens. Do what you like to what you want, but realise that this board is a Hot Rodder's board and that Hot Rodders, REAL Hot Rodders, modify anything and everything that they touch. Cosmo
For what it's worth, I got a 63 Fairlane 2 door hardtop new and a lot of the chrome trim was ditched and the holes filled (poorly with bondo I might add since my skills at 19 were even more limited than they are now). After 20 years I sold it to a friend's son and gave him all of the stock stuff that I still had, he re-installed the chrome and the original grille that I had replaced with a homemade tube grill (used aluminum tube from a junk TV antenna). I saw the car a few years ago but not sure if it is around yet.
I have not seen an original Fairlane without the hood emblem. The fifth digit of the serial number will tell which engine your car originally came with: L = 221 F = 260
The hood emblem was standard I believe , even my 6cyl 500 had it and it was factory stock purchased from the original owner @ 1968. It was years befor I saw another 500 with as much trim as mine . I miss that car bad ! it is still around and bad ***, got a big block in it now I get to wrench on it once and a while of corse it allways needs a test drive ....
Try here, they have '62 Fairlanes. I've bought parts from them before. Several are available. http://www.allamericancl***ics.com/ford.html#fairlane
