Cast Iron Model A rear Wishbones

On the 28-29' model A's. They had the cast Iron rear wishbones.

Would you use them? Im not running a torque tube, but I am running an open driveline 46' banjo.

Can I use these and attach to the frame center crossmember...like stock but not on the torque tube.

I was going to attach a bushing or heim joint on the ends to a bracket to the crossmember.

Your thoughts on using these?

I agree, those are way, way too thin. People have trouble with the later 35-48's and they are much heavier. I know many will disagree with me, but in my opinion, split bones on the rear is just not a good idea.

If not split bones, them what? 4-bar, ladder bars? I need to know for a similar build...

 

I believe the wishbones are rolled steel not cast iron.
If you look on the underside of the 'bone you should see a seam.

If they were cast iron you wouldn't be able to lift them and they would be way too brittle for use as a suspension part.

 

Your partly right. I have a set w/ the seam and a set that are cast iron.

I dont want to split them, just mount them back to the frame (rear of center crosmember) like stock; add a panhard bar and maybe a torque arm too.

I feel like im not making sense.

Pete and Jakes makes ladder bars with brackets for the banjo rear end.

I would not use the Model A "radius rods". Ones from 35 and up are better.

 

Chopped, your on the right track. Keeping the "arms" at the center IS the way to go. (that's the way Ford did it originally) But the "A" arms are a little light - depending on what engine your going to run. The part that attaches to the axle is FORGED not cast. But the tube(s) are too thin. If you use later rear wishbones and a panhard rod you might not need a torque arm. (again depending on how "tough" the engine is)

One thing you will need to keep in mind is the "arms" will need to be NEAR the same length and location of the transmission driveshaft output.

They're not cast, but forged, and fine on a Model A...

I have a set of cut down '36 'bones..to mount to the sides of the frame......and a set of stockers....if you really want to go that way....your choice, $200 each

why take the chance of your rear end coming out from under ya?..buy a new set of ladder bars from Pete and Jakes....
