Lucky MY ***! The stuff is out there but it takes work to find it. TALK to people, get at least one old car on the road and drive it EVERYWHERE, it's a great icebreaker and I pretty regularly get folks asking ME if I want their old parts. Search craigslist, call up guys that are selling "street rods" and ask if they have "leftovers" they want to get rid of, etc... I don't know why I'm telling you guys this.... giving away my methods here...:D

I worked on the steering a bit, did this one a little different than the last few ch***is I've done, I mounted the engine about an inch higher to make a little more room for the box/lower rad hoses/crank pulley/belts/etc... This worked out well because the '36+ center X positions the rear of the trans a little higher than an earlier one also. Anyhow, instead of welding a new flange on the box, I bolted it right to the framerail. Once the body is on, I'll cut most of the mounting area around the box, position the wheel/column and fill+reweld the frame up. Kinda like building a little "pop-out" area for the box to sit in. Scanning early mags, it seems many early rods were done this way or similar. Should be neat and a little different than what you usually see these days, all said and done.

Ebrake bracket fabbed and the handle is mounted... gotta make an eq bar and linkage rod and that's all set.

What a great project! I've got a '37 X member that I plan to use in '32 rails, did you pinch the rails at the cowl for the '31 body? Bob

Bob, I didn't pinch them, I'll spread the cowl a wee bit and "mini-channel" the subrail extensions so the body sits DOWN on the frame. I like the look of gently curving the cowl beadline up to follow the reveal so that will be done once I start shoring the body up... This car is going to look pretty "rustic" until this fall, then I'll tear it down and fix up the body, prep, paint and plate everything else over the long buffalo winter. This one's a keeper, I made that mistake once already with the last AV8...

Clutch pedal works now... Gonna pull a few extra hours on this after work tmw night, run brake and fuel lines, and hopefully the body will meet the frame for the first time...!!!

When you get a chance; maybe a pic of the steering box mount? I read it a few times, but I can't visualize what was done.

movin right along.... repairing the torched up subrails, installing crosschannels, making subrails for the kicked up rear... cowl is spread and the minichannel done under the firewall.

How often do you look at this roadster and say "dammit I've already done this once before" haha

I'm sure this one will look killer too.

Haha, a lot! But that's the point and the reasoning behind it really... I go through a couple cars a year on average... that old roadster is THE one I kick myself over the most, so I'm building a replacement to slience that nagging voice in the back of my head that's constantly calling me an idiot for selling it. It is an almost identical parts pile, but there are a few differences. Kicked up frame with an A front crossmember so it will sit a couple inches lower than the last one, '40 X instead of '32 Kmember, A rear crossmember instead of a T, split bones versus intact, etc... None of the changes are anything that I would call improvements... just differences.

Sounds like a pretty solid plan man. Maybe you mentioned it, but what are your plans for paint/interior?

For now... nothing. I'm fully prepared for all the "nice rat rod" comments the car will surely garner in its current "finish"... After bonneville/ROG, it'll be torn down for paint/polishing/plating over the winter. I'm unsure on colors yet, although black sure is nice.

Can't go wrong with black. Though I'm a huge fan of the "lesser" used stock A colors (redbeard's roadster for example) too.

Haha for sure you'll get some of those comments but whatever. A car can be "ratty" and not be a rat rod, besides, those who know get it and "civilians" never will :p

I really like some of those colors too, just not on my personal car, haha! Yea, I'm used to it....unfortunately.

If you have not thought about it yet. I have a 28 on 32 rails with a 6 inch Zeeee in the back. I ended up spreading the body floor at the kick up so I did not have to re engineer the whole rear body to clear the frame as it went up into the body.
    Just a thought.
