When my own shop gets to messy to move around in, and my ham (HAMB?) handed fabrication skills get me down, I try to re-charge by visiting my pals Dennis and Matt Lesky. Today we loaded up the short bus with students from the Gilmore Garage Works, several of the mentors, and headed up to sunny Ionia for a tour of the "Ionia Rod Shop".

As usual, Dennis and Matt were great hosts, taking time out from their busy work day and showed us several projects in the works. We got a lesson in making intricate steel sculpture from, as Dennis calls it, "boiler plate", and saw how as simple a thing as an engine mount or battery box can be a work of art.

Follow along, or check out more at "Cool McCool's Garage".

Welding and grinding at IHRS . The grinding is a skill as much as the welding and Matt and I have done our share . The other part is making things that that are in your head real , getting burned , cut , shocked is just part of the fun . Go have some fun in your own garage , shop or on the ground outside I enjoy seeing what others are doing !

  3. The transmission reliefs in the X-member are beyond ingenious. Their genius!
