Trying to get a '52 crestline that has been sitting for a while to move! got the flathead running (not well, but running) and I tried to put it in gear and the it didn't move! I ***ume this means that the transmission is stuck, how can i get this transmission to go into gear? Thanks!
First check fluid level with it running,if low add as needed. If the converter has drainded back to the pan it won't go !! If fluid level is correct and still no go time to pull trans as not much can be done in the car.
How long has it been sitting? Is there oil in the Transmission? Is it going in to gear but the brakes are seized? Need a little bit more info to really help.
similar problem happened to me when I got my '53 merc running, and it was low on ****** fluid. If your dipstick/fill tub is not in the engine bay/p***enger side you prob have a early ford-o-matic trans. The dipstick/fill tube is located through an access body plug on the front p***enger side of your trans tunnel inside the vehicle (yes, I know what your thinking...). Just pull back the carpet on the p***enger side and look for an oval rubber plug. when you remove the dipstick you'll prob hear the pump gasping for juice.
Are you saying you couldn't move the gear shift or the car wouldn't move after you moved the gear shift?
The brakes are not seized because the car does roll! It's been sitting for probably about 30 years (not encouraging, I know) and you physically put the shifter in gear, the car just doesn't move! Thanks for the replies so far. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Fill the transmission up to level and try ALL GEARS! Does it go into Reverse, Lo, and DR, or none of them? If none, then do a mainline pressure check! That will tell you if the front pump has any life or the pickup screen is clogged. If pressure is above 100 psi in the 3 ranges, then something is bad internally or the converter is leaking internally. If Dr works, the Lo/Rev band is probably stuck (servo piston is stuck or band or both). If Dr does not work and the Lo and Rev ranges are ok, then the 2nd gear band is probably stuck or the apply piston for the band is stuck. That is where I would start.
If it has an original trans, it will have an air cooled converter and air ducts built into the bell housing. The hole in the tunnel for the filler also is access for the rear band adjuster. Pull the filler cap and sniff. If the fluid stinks and looks burnt, it's toast. That may be the reason the car's been sitting.
