Cleaning/tearing apart a rearend and can finally read the stamped bottom rib. I've seen them stamped with ratios like 39-11, 34-9, and 37-9. Mines stamped 40-9. So thats a ratio of 4.44:1 right?
Yup. Except......the ring and pinion MAY have been replaced at some time in the 76 years since the car was new. Best to do the old "mark, turn and count" system to be double sure.
4.44 ratio came in 60 HP pickups. That little 60 neede all the help it could get. They put the 60 in trucks up to 1 ton, don't what ratio they put in 60 HP 1 tons but it had to be a stump puller.
Did some turning and counting tonight to double check and its 4.44:1. They're wide fives. I thought they where out of a truck. The guy I got them from swore there out of a car . Anyways, That ratios going to be a little heavy for me. So other then used and Speedway, is there anyone else that carries these ring and pinions?
Its a wonder that any of the 4.44 are still around.. The reason this was the perfect gear to use in a 1/4 mile dirt track flathead powered race car using 2 nd gear.. I only found 1 that was for sale .. and this was over 45 years ago.. Bobby..
According to the Early Ford V-8 Club of America 1937 Ford Book (page 8-4), the 4:44 rear end was THE standard and most common rear axle for 60 hp cars. So the 4:44 was not just 60 hp trucks.
When I was buying Ford Parts from a guy in central Indiana, he offered me a complete 60 hp rear end with radius rods and tube for free. Just get it off of the property. I had no way of knowing he would make the offer and I was unable to take it home because my truck was packed with the stuff I came there for.
