Well its my first time mixing and painting with a gravity feed air gun. I am painting the frame of my f100 with industrial rustoleum red primer then the industrial rustoleum black gloss after. I was told the primer has to be thinned 10 % per quart? How much would that be? Im sorry im not too good at this at all.
gee my 5th grade math would make that 3.2 ounces of thinner to a 32 ounce quart of paint. Are you going to add any hardener to your top coat????
Like I said I am not good at this stuff. Yes I am using hardner as I am told it will also have more shine. If thats true.
one ounce of reducer for every 10 ounces go to your local hardware store and get a mixing cup it will have numbers on the side in incriments if you put 20 parts paint 2parts reducer
I actually thinned closer to 20 % with acetone and used a 1.8 tip.It srayed out real well and the finshed looked pretty good.Using a marked cup from the paint supply place helps to measure.
Thin your color and your primer 10 percent with Laquer thinner, forget the thinner made for it its slower than hell and leaves it gummy....Rustoleum is great for a ch***is color and stay good a long time.... in leiu of having a viscosity cup try this..... using a common paint stick, stir the mixture up well and then pull the stick strait up out of your paint..... counting one second at a time you should have a steady drop drop drop till 9 or 10 seconds before it stops and hesitates [longer]......that is an ideal viscosity
Try thinning it slowly---stir it with a paint stick and remove the stick. Count the DROPS and quit thinning it when 10-12 drips fall. Fewer drips---add a little thinner. DONT go to much though.
Well I sprayed and its working well. I added more thinner and after about 2-3 seconds there are individual droplets. Adding more wont change the tone of the paint right? Well I hope not
Once it starts dripping, shoot for 10-12 drops. Than should work fine. As long as it sprays well and lays down without a lot of orange peel, you should be OK.
Well this is the undercoat and its that red oxide color primer thats alittle orange ish. So we will see
good luck on the black top coat. I havent gave up yet, but I can spray rusty metal primer slick as gl*** and then when Id go to the black, both semi gloss and flat, it spits and spatters and orange peels a bunch. I hope you do better then me when you go to the black.
Thats what im nervous for. Did you have the psi too high? Also was the paint thinned enough? How do you avoid orange peel?
I think I would do some more prep work on the frame before paint. It's ok to use a filler on those pitted areas, then sand smooth.
I thinned it to what it was recommended to. Cleaned my gun and then started shooting. If I remember right I closed up the fan and sprayed it thick so it wasnt splattering as much. I just remember I was pissed because of how well the primer shot compared to the black. It still was ok for a frame and then a skid plate I did. When I painted my truck I used a two part flat black and it shot fine. I just cannot figure out rustoleum.
I think it turned out good. A little texture on a frame is not a bad thing..especially on a truck. Now just shoot the black.
I am prepping the primer for the top coat pant I was told to use a Scotch Brite 600 grit pad.. where do I get it and what is the process of the prepping and what should it look like after I am done?
