Id like to fill my tranny up and start my car but still have the driveshaft off. Will i lose all my fluid thruogh the propeller shaft end? I know more modern trans have a tailshaft seal between the spline and driveshaft, does a 1955 hydromatic trans have the same?

There is only the end seal so you will lose the fluid. I just changed it and the bushing last week in my 56 Star Chief. Don

  3. I have a '54 and a '55 hydromatic. Both were bolted to the engine, but neither had the yoke or driveshaft attached. Both were full of fluid until I dropped the pan and drained them...

You must have been lucky? My temporary patch. Piece of correct sized pvc pipe and a plug.

  5. Obviously a misunderstanding then. It looks like the tailshaft has been removed from your transmission?

    speedy,

i had the same thing, when dropped the driveshaft nothing came out. but after talking to guys at work, i just got lucky or the tranny was already low. looks like bobert's pvc goes around the tailshaft then is plugged on the end.

    bobert,
am i correct? thanks for the help.

You are correct...at least, that's the way I do it. (and it works!) No need to buy an extra slip yoke. ($$$)

Yup that's where it goes. Replaces the yoke in size. I used that plug cause it was on hand. Could have used a pvc cap. The yoke was already on the u-joint. I some times do stuff backwards.
