Bellflowers would look sweet. But if you wanna do lake pipes then do it. Either way, both will look good when the car is slammed

i've got a '61 impala too, but i've got the hardtop "sport sedan". im going in that kind of a direction too, i've got lakes pipes, and i'm thinkin about putting them on as well fully functional. and i've got 8 inch wide chrome reverse for the back... not sure for the front until i can afford more chrome reverse wheels. but i like the style you're thinking about going with yours. i'm thinking of "watson style" panel/fogged paint. these '61's are PERFECT for the paneled paint job! but i would agree with the post about cragar ss wheels and skinny whites and SLAMMING it. that would look great!

  9. Only if it's lowered and with flipper hubcaps. And never on a bubble top.

I'd have to agree with Willbe in that they have to be part of the whole package with flippers and proper white walls for the car's time frame. I see too many on cars that have side pipes that look like they were stuck on as an afterthought with no consideration as to how they actually fit in with the whole appearance of the vehicle.

Thats a toss up between lakes and bellflowers... I say I would do lakes, fully functional, just regular angle cut ends (no caps), thin whites but not too thin, like 1", and chrome steelies with spiders... I've always viewed early '60s like '61, '62, etc. to still be more '50s styling.... There wasn't all of a sudden a unanimous change in style on New Years 1960 and everybody only did "60s" style from then on out...I don't think late '50s stuff was phased out until well into '64/'65. My personal theory is that decades, as far as popular culture go, don't end in "0" but end in "4" (i.e. the '50s are really more so '55-'64, the '60s '65-'74, etc.) This applies all throughout history. Just my theory though....

I agree about the period correct statement. It's not that important, not enough of us old timers around to give you a bad time about it.

All the '61's in my area looked just like your car is now. The more serious guys would have cheater slicks on steel rims in the back.

Reason being, usually the second or third owner of a 61 chevy would rod it, not the original owner. So that meant these second owners didn't obtain your 61 until 1963-64. Muscle car era had started and all the cars went up.
