Hey Gang - my good friend has this tool he picked up at a sale, because as he put's it "it was cheap and he thought it was cool", but he (nor I) have any idea what it was made for. I was telling him that if anyone could figure it out, it would be one of you guys - you never cease to amaze me with your knowledge. Having said that, can anyone help us figure out what the heck this tool was made to do? Thanks! rg
It was made for removing valve springs while the head is still in place or from a flathead. I probablty wouldn't use it for anything any more then I use my Model A tool kit for anything but it is an oddity and maybe should become a wall hanger.
I have one that works simular in theory but it can be mounted on a bench. Makes ***embling FH valves a snap.
Just think of the old fellow that used that tool countless times...working over the front brake drum, wheel/tire removed...hot drop light getting tangled up in right arm after 2 or 3 springs removed... What did he say? What were the words...? Yeah. Conversation piece. I've used 'em...(customers' cars...mine were V8s) LOL
I work on many very pre-war cars and I still use a wide varity of compressors, some from my Dad's old 50s shop, and some I find at swaps. The last two cars here were 12 buick and now an 07 Ford. On the 12 Buick, I used a real dainty looking C style one that I had never found a use for before. I also used a modern chevy 4wd front wheel bearing socket to remove the valve "cages" from the headless type motor
I agree, you should definitely tell him to throw it away. Away right in my direction. It would work nicely on the flathead packards.
He's a very talented builder and can make almost anything run, plus he's the kind of guy that would give it to someone that he knew would use it. I always tell him he's a mechanical genius since I've seen some of his solutions and mad-skills pan out in many a cool fix or two. We both kind of figured it was a compressor used in ***embly, repair, manufacturing - just too specialized to be a general use piece... but we were both stumped as to what exactly it may have been used for. I'll print this and hand it to him after work - he doesn't usually do the computer thing but enjoys hearing about the HAMB and all the builds. You guys are great - bob
Everyone is wrong, I have seen that tool before but I can't remember it's name. Next time I take the wife to see her OB/GYN I'll ask the doctor what it is called!
