Y.O.M. original California plates...I have questions.

  1. Ok, the only way you can run plates other then new ones (under regular registration) is if the vehicle has them on them now. If the registration isn't current and you can prove they were registered to that vehicle (pink slip or old registration) then you can fight to have them. If you have say '63 plates but the vehicle has new white plates now (registered to it) you can FIGHT to get the '63 plates put back on under regular registration but you have to have proof they were once registered to the vehicle (pink slip or old registration). If you don't want new white plates and you want to run old plates then it's YOM or nothing.

This is why I personally would run any plate from the blue ones and older if I had them. To me even the blue plates look better then the YOM ones, but all my cars had white plates when I bought them (or no plates at all).

As always Sacramento has final say.................

YOM plates ARE the OLD plates, so what you are saying here makes no sense. Do you mean the Legacy Plates (which don't exist yet)

I have found a set of 1956 commercial CA plates and they are clear with no issues and I was told have never been in the Y.O.M. program or whatever. So thats why I had asked if I could just register them to my 60 but not Y.O.M. So if and when I sell the truck I would keep the plates for the next 56-60 I own.

To use those plates on your truck you would need to get a 1960 sticker, then take them in to DMV and register them through the YOM program. That is the only Legal way to run them.

technically that is correct. BUT I know a guy that had a set of 56 pates on his 58 with the sticker. When he sold the 58 he filled out the form to keep the plates. He bought a 56, peeled the sticker off and took them into DMV and registered them to his 56. Don't know if they just lucked through or what, but it worked.

  9. I guess it would be black or blue plates that are still on the vehicle.

    Welcome to the California DMV.

Under the YOM program, the plates are registered to you. To sell a car with YOM plates, you would have to give the buyer a statement of fact stating you are giving up interest in the plates. I've bought 2 YOM plated cars in the past.

I had gotten a real nice set of black/yellow plates from a buddy. They were not dmv clear because they came off a car that was totaled. The dmv told me the car and the year it was totaled

The bummer of all of this is that when I got the truck at 18 years old, it had blue California plates and I ditched them for lame personalized plate using the nickname my dad used to call me. At this point in time I don't think I could stomach using those same personalized plates... They're to ****y and not me any more.

Maybe waiting for legacy plates makes more sense, and in the meantime I'll just use standard current California plates.
