Maybe it's too late to get flamed. I'll see. I just got done watching a show on The Smithsonian Channel called, "Cars of the maharajas". It told the story of Rolls Royce in India. Starting from about 1910 to the early 1950's, when the rule of the Maharajas ended. This is not a clip from that show and I'm sure it will repeat soon, but the show made me look for something on YouTube and here's what I found. They're not hot rods, but I'm sure they are traditional. You can't help but admire the fit and finish of these cl***ic cars. Amazingly, after the rule of the Maharajas, over 300 of the over 750 registered Rolls Royce's in India were s****ed! Some were parked, some lost and some were found and restored. This is a clip of some shown at Pebble Beach. If this is too OT, I'm sure it will get deleted.
They were the highlight of Pebble Beach last year. Absolutely stunning. I'll have to check for a rerun
I believe the ***le was The Maharajas' Motor Car. ( in case you need the ***le to program your recorder.) The Youtube link is to a BBC program, but I think its the same one. Edit. Here it is... http://www.smithsonianchannel.com/sc/web/show/137811/the-maharajas-motor-car
I was lucky enough to be involved with the restoration of this car for the maharaja of jodhpur a few years ago, Rolls-Royce phantom 1 with body by windovers. Iirc you get a glimpse of an original coach builders photo of this car in the opening credits of the do***entary. We where restoring it at the time the lim was made.
Where else but on the HAMB will we mine the history of coachbuilding for hot-rod and custom ideas? I wait with bated breath: keep it coming!
Thank you tfeverfred! What a great 15 minute history lesson, great cars and people with a p***ion to enjoy them. Bob
It is interesting, when one does a search for "vintage Rolls-Royce" or similar terms, how many hits one gets on the Indian website, Team-BHP. I know that there is enough ingenuity there to support a hot rod movement, though apparently it is severely restricted by the legislation surrounding the importing of parts. Shown several times but not mentioned in that video clip is the Jarvis Phantom I torpedo that inspired the stretched '27 T in my avatar.
I saw it and I thought it was a really cool program. ( I only said something about the ***le to make it easier to find...)
I don't know which show it was on? the RR are real cl***ics, but that one car that looked like a big white goose was just too hideous. Ago
Wish I was a gold chainer like you guys with the Smithsonian Channel. Its a premium channel above my programming level. Thanks for the YouTube links.
I have watched that three times since it aired... I could watch it 500 more times and not get tired of it.. Just interesting history of times way back when.. How about if you drive the RR home (2000 + miles) you can have it(1962)
My butler told about the shows airing, however, I was preoccupied with the housekeepers daughter and the maid.
