I have a 1953 Pontiac chieftain (hydramatic/flat 8) with a shifting issue. The car has been sitting for about a year. I went to drive it today and I could not get it into gear. After a bit of forcing the shifter to shift, I was able to get it to shift into forward and now I can not get the shifter to pull forward so I can put it in to reverse. It seams like rust is in the steering column where the shifter needs to move. I shot a bunch of wd40 in the column and now it shifts into forward real easy but no go on reverse or low. I also disconnected the transmission link at the bottom of the steering column and still the same. Any ideas on how to fix this issue? As I see it I need to pull the steering column and clean it out some how.???
Intro?... Hi.. how you all doing? Weather good on the net? fluf fluf fluf Soo , I was wondering if you all could help a kid out. My Grandfather bought this 1953 Pontiac back in 1953 from the factory in MI and drove my dad to CA in it and buy chance I own it now. And by chance I let it sit to long and our wet weather did something to it. See above.
yeah, INTRO. Follow the damn rules and don't be so damn arrogant. We are more than happy to help, but you need to show some respect by following the rules and being just a bit more humble when somebody points out that an INTRO is necessary.
Yep still stuck solid when I try and pull it towards me. I have put 2 cans of wd40 And some seAfoam agent down it. The fluids just pore out the bottom. I finally had to remove the 1/4 inch plate of steel on the shifter column that guides the rods. This allows me to get the car in reverse with no problem. I just need to remember not to shift it into reverse while driving. Sorry I did not know there was a rule about intros. I will go do one. It is great to hear that 1 person has had the same issue.
