    Hi all,
Acquired a Ford flathead adapter for my Sun distributor machine. Decent enough except for the missing shaft. In process of making one from scrap bin steel, got the offset slot finished at the distributor end.
The chuck end of the shaft needs a slot machined also.
Does anyone know the angle that the slot has to be offset from the other end? The two slots are not supposed to line up.
Best would be a factory blueprint (dreaming, I know).
I suppose that the angle is the same as the one on a KR Wilson fixture - not sure as I do not have one. Reverse engineering sure is fun <grin>.
    Thanks for any help.

I don't have the fixture, a buddy has one and we can ask him. As a thought did you ask that guy in Michigan that builds the new sun machines? He makes those fixtures and might help you out.
Shoot me a pm tomorrow if you can't figure it out and i'll ask my buddy.

    Thanks OJ,
Last time I talked to Sun guy Mark from Michigan, he did not have any adapters.
    Sending you a PM.
Anyone else have a shaft to measure? Cripes - that sounds dirty.

Try the Fordbarn--someone there almost certainly has one.

I have the manual here, and it shows the slot lines up with the tab. Both are .31-.32 offset. The same adapter is used for cam swaps, or using the "diving bell" distributor on a newer engine.

R Pope - is there any chance you can show a picture?
I am now confused - there was a post last year on Fordbarn where a fellow said he makes them - he mentioned a 45 degree offset - also said he had the factory blueprint. Sadly, it appears that he has not posted in about a year.
    This is getting really interesting....

Tom...sent you a PM. Took a pic but don't know how to post it. My brother will be here soon, he knows computers, so I'll get him to do it.
I have an original Ford distributor machine with a radio tube tester on it. It uses a 6v battery for power. No shaft adapter with mine either! Its about 3 feet high, on caster wheels. Never had it working, but its a cool piece anyway.
What did they use as a vacuum source?

I see no reason to offset the tang and slot. Maybe strength would be less if they are lined up? There is no timing issue in where the two are positioned relative to each other.

Looking at the OP, and maybe you need a different piece than the one in my book. This one is only .40 inch thick. It allows for the difference in lengths of early vs. late flathead camshafts. How long a spacer does your machine need?

That's the picture from wartime and 1946 Canadian Ford manuals! My favorite books...I was just reaching for mine when this posted.

    R Pope,
Thanks for the effort, but there must be some confusion here...
I am looking for the shaft dimensions for the Sun distributor machine flathead adapter fixture.
It is about six inches long? Slides through a 1/2" ID oillite bushing in the fixture.
    Hope this helps.
