i want to put an aluminum flywheel in my plymouth flathead. anybody know where i can find one? or has anyone ever seen one?
Why do you want an aluminum flywheel for this motor? You are going to need the weight to launch the car.
What car do you have it in? An aluminum flywheel allows an engine to spin faster but that isn't really what you want in a heavy car with a relatively small motor. I'm actually asking out of curiosity. Maybe you know something I don't.
its for a 51 plymouth bizz coupe. im lookin to run her as hard as i can. i want to use the baddest of whats availible for the flatty. thats it. thought you might have known somethin i didnt.
I don't know where you can find one, but I have heard they exist. If you really want to make that flathead six HONK you need to get inside it. Crank mods are the biggest thing. BTW- cool score on the intake, ya don't see the 2x2 very often.
i got a 56 flatty im sending out. i want to build it real wild. i got stoked on that edmunds. couldnt p*** it up. its goin in that buisness coupe. i need to take down a couple of local ford flatties.
not too tough to match a Ford flatty for power until they start strokin'. You're right on their heels in stock hp. Cross drill the crank, balance and align hone. You can spin 7 grand all day, if everything else will keep up. You can stroke it too, if you can afford the pistons.
after you're done practicing on the Ford guys I'll bring the Wayfarer and teach your Plym. a lesson! Just kidding, what all are you planning for your flathead six?
Uhhh, I don't think your going to see 7K rpm on a mopar flathead motor....for very long. Adapting a trans to live with that would be expensive too. Don't forget a custom ****ter shield! Hudson over at Inliners (in the MoPar section) has written up some experiences he's had with modifications to the Mopar flattie in his tractor puller. Over 5K you run into crank/main/rod journal oiling problems even with cross drilling and all the other tricks. At 6k rpm the valves start to float. Its all got to work together to reach that 7k : big cam, mucho induction and strong valve springs. His knowledge is great reading for those of us that are fortunate enough to run Mopar engines (and want to dream) Your going to get your power out of the flat head at 5K if you want the motor to live. Heres the thread:http://www.inliners.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t=000021 You don't need no stinkin aluminum flywheel! Get some compression, carbs, headers, street cam and booggie. ps: if you have to have a light flywheel take your steel wheel to a machinist and have it lightened. I used to do that on my VW race motors cause it was cheaper than a custom unit. (me is cheap!) Well, thats my story and I'm stickin to it.
just lookin to build a hard runin motor for my custom. i got the 2x2 edmunds, headers from langdon o.d. trans with a 9" and 373s . just lookin for some insight and want to do it right the first time for the first time
i dont have to lighten the flywheel. but when in rome. im just lookin to build a hard runnin motor. so before i have it asembled im just tryin to find all the hop up goddies i can so i dont have to tear back into it. you know. i dont want some dude in a couple years walkin up to my ride with the hood open goin you know i have an aluminium flywheel for that thing.im just collectin all my **** before i build it. i always **** something up so im trying to find all the "****" before i get started. i know you know where im coming from.
finned aluminum high compression head, cam, intake, headers, cross drilled crank, stainless valves, HEI distributor, a little port work, that's about it, unless you want to get really crazy and build a stroker.
the only source I know of for a head is Earl (Edgy) Edgerton, but he does them in pretty limited runs. I've heard that Phillips performance is back up and running, but he's pricey, and was real evasive several years ago when I tried to deal with him. I got an Edgy head about three years ago, nice stuff.
zigg will be settin me up with the mag so when i get the price worked out i'll let you know how much. you should head west next weeken for the primer nats. good show, lots of good bros around.
definitely keep me posted on the mag- I have a drag mill that I want one for, if not my Wayfarer. Can't make the show, family coming this weekend.
