I was just coming into Salem on the interstate, on my way home from the NSRA NW Nationals Sunday when the vehicle ahead of me spit out about 3 feet of 18 wheeler tread. I ran over it, too, and hit the next exit, was planning to anyway for gas.
I heard some s****ing as I braked so when I stopped I checked and SH/#!!! That hunk of rubber totalled my grill insert and the lower sheetmetal of the grill.
My pickup is a '36 Chevy with no fenders or hood. While the grill is old steel, I am not sure if it was from a car or pickup and could possibly be from a '33 all the way to '36. They all look about the same, does anyone know of differences?
I am checking the 'net for originals for sale. Also checking repros. Repro insert are expensive!
I have only found repro shells in fibergl***. As overpriced as they are I probably couldn't touch a steel repro anyway
I think the major portion of my shell is acceptable, but haven't found any of the bolt on "chins" for sale separately. Mine is mangled.
My first instinct is to scrounge the parts and fix it myself. Later I found myself wondering about filing a claim on my insurance. I have no idea what kind of h***le that could be. I don't handle bureaucracy well.

Post a pik. There's a lot of difference between 33-36 grilles and again differences between cars and pickups. The one in my avatar is a 36 car type grille.

That happened to my OT car while my wife was driving. Did over $2G in damages. Insurance company wanted to say it was "collision" (with $500 deductible) until I told them it was airborne when it hit the car (comprehensive $100 deductible).

A picture of the grill would be good. I have a 36 low cab (late 36),

You might be able to find someone that can bang that sheetmetal back into shape.

Couldn't bring myself to look at it yesterday. Went out to take a few pics and decided that I am a whiny sob.
Not as bad as I felt seeing it the first time, but then I did pull the center of the grill forward and have the busted portion tied up.
Still, just not happy. I love that old truck and always favored the '34 type grills peaked at the bottom, and my oldest granddaughter loves it even more (10 now, has 8 years of cruising under her belt).
I did post this thread before. It got deleted. I used a term that I didn't know was inappropriate here. It begins with "r" and is engraved on alot of the 40+ trophies the truck has been awarded.
I won't do it again. I value this site. I hope someone will pm me and explain because I scoured the rules and couldn't find anything about it.
Now I have pics on my phone and being a technophobe I need someone to tell me how to post them on this thread.

  11. The focus of this site is traditional hotrodding/customizing.

There is very little in the "RR" fad that is traditional, and the loose term conjures visions of builds that are unsafe, poorly-thought-out and overly "in-your-face" ugly.

  12. You can post pics a lot easier from you phone if you get the HAMB app. I'd like to see pics of your truck. I have a '34.

  14. Is that the steering box next to the grille?

The grille itself doesn't look that awful bad, unless it's cast, then straightening it will be a pain.

Yeah, that is the steering box. Rock solid so I can wait to replace it with something better.
I'll pull it out and bang on it to see if I can bet by without a replacement, but the piece that attaches with two small bolts at the bottom of the shell is mangled, including the stainless trim on it.

Eh its not that bad. Get it so you don't have parts dangling and drive it. Now you have a story til you can afford the replacement parts.

if you know a old timer body man that uses a hammer and dolly they can work miricales not like these new bodyman which just unglue and reglue fenders on . if you have all the parts its repairable even if its torn , just takes a bit of patients .

I had to learn how to bang metal at a young age and glad I learned , even with a cheap set of hammers and dollies I can get it nice , its the person behind the tools that get it done , and with nicer tools its easier , the sheetmetal bumping book will teach the right way of doing it , its not just hammer away , I was lucky I had 2 uncles who taught me how to slap steel as they call it . its patients more than anything .. photographs help also
