I've been hammering away at this for some time and have gotten on the wrong track twice. I want to keep my original 40 Chrysler wheel centers but use 16 x 6" wide rims. (The originals were only 4 1/4" wide) The main reason for keeping them is so that the original hubcaps can be used. And the 16 x 6" rims are so I can run radials. The Chrys center measures 13 1/2" in diameter and was press-fit into the rim that was 13 7/16" diameter (1/16" interference) Got a Dodge truck rim, but the inside of the rim part is too small and either it, or the Chrys center would have to be machined to mate. (Something like .200 interference, IIRC.......way too much) And, the rim material was way too thick....read HEAVY OK, throw that idea away. Spied some dually wheels from a 78 Ford 250 that looked like they'd work; but after getting them home and torching out one center, the rim would need any remnant of the center bored out and a 3/16 (approx) filler ring to mate with the Chrysl center. Size-wise, they would've worked but I couldn't get the backspace to come out correctly. see pic Throw those away. Contacted Dexstar wheels in Indiana about buying their rims, but they couldn't (or wouldn't) tell me what the inner diameter was. Said I'd have to go to Walmart or Tractor Supply to buy them. Stopped in at both places.....neither place has them. Pic is of the Ford dually wheel next to the Chrys center. Anyone have an idea of what rims might work for these ***emblies? Or the name of a company that can make them? Thnx, Gatz
I'm running 215/85/r16 on 4 1/2" early ford rims no issues. The car is light, 31 A coupe. The tires are common for 1 ton duallys.
'95-'97 Olds Cutl*** Supreme used a steel 16" x 6'' or 6 1/2'' wheel, I haven't been able to find one yet but I think it might work I'm trying to do the same thing with early Ford wheels.
Wheelsmith or Jimmy at Rally America. As far as Stockton wheel you may have a better shot dropping them into a volcano, letting the wheel dematerialize and join with the magma. Then wait 3000 years for an advanced hot-rod loving alien culture to crash land in said volcano, their hyper smart space ship designed to automatically sample surrounding elements will then come into contact with trace elements of your wheel and reconstruct it to exacting standards, deciding to add width because said hyper smart computer cross referenced old Hamb threads and found this thread. It will then create a temporal bubble, transporting the wheels back in time to just before you throw them in the volcano. I guess my point is when you're on the rim of the volcano about to throw them in, and the new wheels you want show up next to you, you have to continue throwing them in. Otherwise they would never get the chance to dematerialize and join with the magma, then 3000 years later be reconstructed to exacting standards, except for the added width because some hyper smart computer cross referenced old Hamb threads. Dig? Those aren't just free wheels. That is if they're still in business.
Early 40's Buick ambulance and hertz had 16x6 wheels, I found a pair. Man were they hard to find. Putting 16" ford centers in, and reversing them. The Buick shell measures 13.5, while the Ford center is 13.625. Some minor machine work will take care of that.
