Lompoc Dragstrip fundraiser show & swap meet

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kiwi Kev, Jul 10, 2012.

  1. City Council voted 5-0 to OK the track and now it's all about raising money. Sat' July 14 there will be a car show at the Albertsons at 1500 N H St and the following day (Sun July 15) a swap meet at the old Ford dealership on the corner of H and Chestnut. I can't make it but I hope someone who does will post some pics after the weekend. It will be so cool to see this track come together.

  2. Going with my two boys and my brothers new Willys. Thanks for posting Kev, I called Gil a couple hours ago about posting, and he said you were already on it. If this track comes to be, it would be a bitchen little 1/8th mile for some Nostalgia Show & Go's in cool little farming community just 5 miles from the coast. Anyone who can, please come and show your support. IHRA has visited and pledged full support on this one! IMAG0792.jpg

i'm still not sure why a city council or other gov't agency has to approve anything being done on private land?

Note this is not a rhetorical or smart-ass question----i really dont' know about civics.

Is this going by the airstrip at the south end of H?

Man, wish this was there, when I lived out there!

  5. The drag strip/racing facility will be next to the airport. Far as I know, all the "BS" is done, and now its about funding etc. This is always the last hurtle (if you make it this far in the first place),to many times in the past, when the money showed up, people got greety and started filling their pockets instead of building the track. The group in charge of this project seems to be very legit and the track will be run/maintained by the community so I think it'll will be very cool and successful and without any of the normal shinanagans.

How did it go, any pics??

  9. It went great! I took my two boys and my brother Marc's Willys. An unexpected treat was winning a trophy for "Best Street Rod". This is a small farming town 5 miles from the ocean, IMAG0837.jpg

IMAG0832.jpg so big crowds are hoped for, but not expected. There was 60 cars and a bunch of nice people. The manager of the Albertsons grocery store that hosted the car show was totally stoked. He donated all the food, and the sales from that and the entry for the car show, plus any donations went into the "kitty" for the race track fund. They need to meet with the FAA, The Dept of Fish and Game (there is a creek that runs adjacent to the property) and the Clean Air Board. They do not expect to many road blocks because there is already a small airport there now. Come out Oct. 12-13 for the Friday night cruise at the old Beattie Ford Dealership, and Saturday for the Gasser Round Up (all cool cars, trucks, and bikes welcome)at the Muro Family Ranch. Homemade tacos, beers and other beverages will be available, plus there is usually a good "after party as well as some "thash passes" made down the looong "country road" that passes by the ranch.

    Bump for this cool thing

  14. Great News! The Lompoc Racing Association has received a SUBSTANTIAL,
grant to make this deal a reality. The next usual stumbling block for these race track projects is usually greed. Once the project is funded people start thinking about lining their pockets instead of building the racing facility. There are many people (especially within the Lompoc community including the mayor who have pledged (and who already have) to donate their time and resources. The only stickler so far has been a surveyor who decided to double his fee as soon as he found out the project had been funded. If there are any surveyors in the HAMB community who would like to help in this area pleas PM me and I will contact you with the right people. The second annual Lompoc Car Show and Fund Raiser is this weekend. Any and all are welcome, please come and help support the cause.
With all the threads/news of beloved drag strips closing, this is great news and another huge step to becoming reality. There could be some very cool & fast (Lompoc is nearly @ sea level and 5 miles from the coast) nostalgia racing events in the very near future. Stay tuned!
Check out Gil Muro's '34 5 window on display IN THE SUPER MARKET!
That is a small example of the towns commitment to this racing facility!

  21. I don't have the exact address at the moment, but will get it for you. There is a small semi private airport on the north west end of town, the drag strip will run parallel to the airport with the starting line on the east end ( this from memory as I haven't seen the model since last October). There are also plans for dirt oval track and a motorcross track/park. I believe there is a creek north of where the drag strip will be built that also runs parallel to the airport runway.

Good luck to you guys. Great to see a drag strip build being planned rather than plans to unceremoneously close one down.
That's the best grocery store display ever!

    We plan to be there

  26. Thanks for throwing the link up Paladin, don't know why I didn't think of that. By the way 99% this track will be IHRA sanctioned which is good news for sportsman racers. Seems like the last few years the "other guys" have become less sportsman friendly. I suggested this morning that the drag strip should run west to east to take advantage of on shore tail winds, and I believe they had already decided on that, we'll see. Spread the news/show your support. Lompoc is not a huge community and this deal would really help their economy.
