My uncle has owned this jimmy for a couple decades and its been sitting in a military crate since remanufactured in 71. He brought it out to me from Death Valley and I am the proud new owner. I snapped a few pics to share and I was hoping I could get some insight on that needs to be done to make this thing a street able engine. I will be getting it ready to go into my 53 chevy wagon I am building for my dad once I understand the basics of the magneto and all the other accessories. It has a 24 volt generator and the mag says it is 24v d c. It is strange in so many ways. Look at the plug wires. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Well I will be the first to say you got yourself a winner. If it were me I would drop it in a 33' 34' open fender 3-window cp. and have it.
Cool engine! I think the sparkplug wires are waterproofed. A lot of what is pictured can be removed for resale/discarded for your application. The ignition system can be replaced in it's entirety. Perhaps a period performance distributor or an updated HEI system......see GMC Bubba here on the HAMB. Depending on the trans you wish to use, you may be able to use the existing flywheel/clutch and your '54 bellhousing. The Chev flywheel bolt pattern is different than the GMC, so using the Jimmy flywheel is likely to be necessary, but if the diameter/toothcount is the same the '54 flywheel, the '54 bellhousing and starter may be compatible. If you want an automatic trans, an adapter to a suitable late model automatic would be a good option to consider. Ray
