My buddies and are are looking to go in on a muscle car deal to buy a full blown vimtage type race car. Issue is insuring it for street use. Just spoke to grundy and hagerty and they will only insure for fire and theft because of the cars nature
Is there any way to get full coverage?
Is there any way around this?

  2. No one will insure a race car.HRP

  3. Contact Lloyds of London.....be prepared, $$$$, if you use the words "race car"

  4. If it is street legal it is not a race car so don't tell them that it is. Also don't expect your insurance to cover your exotics if it is not a race car. its catch 22 man.

Why is it a race car? Is it a muscle car that was built for racing? Does it have a VIN? If so, the act of getting it street legal kinda takes the "race only" stigma away from it. On the other hand, if it is an aluminum bodied Hemi car with no VIN, it isnt going to get street registered legally anyway.....more info would help.

  6. Why do you have to tell them it's a race car? If it's street driven, I can't see any reason why you need to tell them

  7. You can buy race car insurance - BUT Not for the street.

And most insurance companies have a clause to exclude cars modified for Racing if driven on the street. I know that Hagerty has a real issue with Nos and Roll bars and has exclusions.
And don't think for a minute that you will get away with Not telling them - it is generally part of the questionnaire process AND if you lie about it you will get caught when a claim happens, it is fraud and at a minimum they will deny coverage.

I searched the Internet for weeks and never found one that would cover a purpose built race car EXCEPT when at home in the garage, being trailered to race and incidents on the paddock. NEVER during actual race. If anyone says otherwise I would love to have a link to that insurer.

  11. what is the car, is it street legal? no car has insurance when racing! go to your regular agent and check with him.

The car was built for racing, fiberglass body parts, stripped interior , plastic windows and 700+hp

Hagerty said anything highly modified with up to 700hp is classified as a race car no exceptions

How do pro street guys get away with this loop hole as i see pro street cars always at cruise nights unless they drive i.legally with no coverage

In NY if you go to the track you can purchase race insurance for up to $500 a day which is just for the day. My friend did this and he wrecked his bmw race car and the paid to repair it

My issue isnt that but how can i drive this crazy car on the street for kicks and pleasure. I have no interest in competitive racing at my age

You still haven't answered if it has a title, vin, etc. You stated it was a muscle car, if it has a title & is street legal, I don't see where the problem is. I've used my regular insurance co to insure a 'classic' with pics & a written third party appraisal, for a stated value. If you go in stating you want to insure your 'race car', don't expect that warm, fuzzy feeling anytime soon. Just my $.02.

What defines a race car and a street car to insurance companies? Is it horsepower or just the level of modifications? This is the gray matter.

as for a vin and titles ive seen pro stock camaros have vin tags and titles but still run wheelie bars and alcohol fuel.

Nobody will insure a car while it's competing in any kind of racing. You should be able to get coverage while storing and to and from the track.

Insurance companies insure automobiles. Street legal automobiles. Best of luck.

All this jabber and we still don't know anything about the car in question. Register as whatever car it is. Insure for whatever car it is. Go street racing and hope you don't need to make a claim, especially if it's your fault. Ken

Race cars don't make for good street cars. Street cars don't make for good race cars, they can't be both. They get gender confusion.
I've driven very fast and powerful cars in both places, still do, and you have to respect the cars for what they are and by wishing they were something else won't make it happen.
You don't hook the Kentucky Derby winner to a cart and go to town on a saturday night would you? That is an insult and disrespecful of the horse.

  23. Not True guys - there are companies that specialize in insuring cars while competing in racing Events - Hall Insurance in North Carolina is one that does it. WSIB is another as is Prosure. K & K Insurance used to but I don't know if they still do. There are quite a few more. It is not cheap, can easily run $1,000 per event sometimes less, sometimes more, but if you have a historic car worth say $75,000 and you write it off when you smack the wall, it's a pretty good deal!

If you don't care about coverage on your vehicle (here we call it fire, theft and comprehensive), just register it with liability insurance and drive it.

If someone hits you, their insurance will pay you.
If you hit a tree, you are on your own.....

Pro Stock cars have vin and titles to prove ownership and legality issues for the chassis builder, such as who is responsible for payment, and /or the bank note for which the build was started. Theres some other reasons that slip my mind at the moment.

If it's got plates, it's registered and you don't give out any racing information, it'll get insured. But just about every specialty insurer has a clause voiding coverage during a race. Can you blame them?
