I belong to this site for my hot rod Lincoln's sake, but I also have a monster truck that I need some info for. It has a really unique and hard to find custom dual tube roll bar on it made by 'HICKEY' The guys name was Vic Hickey and he has a hot rod history that I can only find some info on. I cannot find any info on his off road and custom parts anywhere. I came to the HAMB to see if anyone out there can point me in some direction to locating old HICKEY parts or anyone who knows something about the company. It was Vic Hickey Enterprises and before that he helped design the original Humvee for the military and designed a winch so strong he hung a truck from a tree to prove it! Anyways, I know this is not an off road forum, but this guy has a lot of hot rod history so maybe one of you older guns out there might have seen some of his parts around. Thanks a lot and here is a photo for the heck of it. Take care
I own 4 original Vic Hickey Race cars and trucks Over 600 original photos, and a ton of original parts , I also own the trademark name Hickey Enterprises, I can answer any question you might have, Here is a photo of my original 1969 Chevy C-10 factory Baja race truck
Thats great news! I became real interested in all of Hickey's things once I found that tag on the top of the bar stamped 'HE Hickey'. I was trying to date the roll bar and find out where I could find more parts. My roll bar is real nice and I am a hugely picky person when it comes to customizing and this bar is not your standard single tube that mounts behind the wheel wells. Mine fits nice, dual tube, mounts before the wheel tubs, and is not too flashy. It was hidden behind a cab spoiler/fairing so when I took it off, I was like DAMN! Also has a custom bed cover which wraps around it and just looks great. I went to look up more parts form HE, but nothing ever showed up so I tried forums and the HAMB since I found out Hickey had old race history. Wanted to look into a front guard for the grille, any rear bumpers, cab steps, etc from Hickey, but like I said I got nothing till you. I know he owned the company till around 1980 but thats it. Nothing to know about parts or who owned it and if anything is still available. Let me know if you have anything or know of anyone who might sell some HE stuff. Also wanted to date my roll bar if I could. Someone told me it must have been made before 1979, but I have no clue. Thanks a lot for getting a hold of me. This is a great forum and I swear you can find anyone on here! Take care. John Lyman
hey baja guy, have you been to the gas-up in buellton calif.?its a once a year deal at the late jack mendenhalls(sp) old gas station there and its full of old salt-flats ,hot-rod and gas pumps, signs, ect, around the santa ynez valley there were also 1 or 2 of the olds that james G. raced, and preran baja with,(one was at a friends garage for years but its gone now)jack was a off road guy as well as a true hot-rodder. back in the day they chased baja in a 1960's ford country-squire station wagon with the wheel-wells cut out to fit "truck"tires, jacks son mark keeps the deal going and its bigger and better every year

The Baja Boot was first driven by Bud Ekins then Steve McQueen, James Garner drove the Olds 442 cars for Hickey, I bought the 1970 Goodyear Grabber Olds that was owned by Jack and Mark Mendenhall, Here are some photos
Here is some photos of the Baja Boot, Last March we took the original Baja Boot out to the Las Vegas Mint 400 desert race, We took the Boot out on the pre run day for a one lap 100 mile run, We took my Hickey truck and the Boot there to show and play with
More Boot photos , And the photo of the guy standing next to my race truck is Cliff Coleman, He drove several race cars and trucks for Hickey like the Banshee, Blazer and he drove my truck in the 1968 Baja 1000 and 1969 Mint 400
Is this the Blazer photos you are looking for, I can tell you everything that was on it, I also own the first Blazer ever built, GM gave it to Hickey after he designed the prototype for them, I have SN# 000001, I will post photos
That thing is the definition of badass My neighbors got a Honda CRX setup like that. Chicken wire in the windows, breather up on the A pillar, Hacksaw radiused wheel wells, and the biggest damn tires you can get under a honda.
Rob, I sold my GMC 4x4 today but kept my Hickey roll bar. I could not part with it. I will keep it till I have another 80 something GMC down the road. Come to think of it it must be for long box only trucks. It fit from cab end of bed to snug up against the front of the wheel well hump. Guess it will have to be another long box 80 something GMC. If you ever re manufacture any parts, please let me know and post some photos! Let us know what years and models they are for as well. If you ever make anything for newer model GM trucks I'd love to see it. I have an 06 that could use some stuff here and there. Take care and thanks for keeping Hickey stuff alive!
Vic Hickey built 2 Baja Boots, The first one raced in the 1967 Baja 100 with Drino Miller driving with Vic Wilson, Later Bud Ekins and Guy Jones drove it and won the 1969 Baja 500, Then Steve McQueen drove it and later bought it, James Garner drove 3 Olds 442 race cars in Baja for Vic HickeyI own the 1970 Olds 442(GOODYEAR GRABBER OLDS) a friend owns the other 2
Some very cool hot rod history there. I grew up looking at my dads Hot Rod Magazines and dug it when the covered Baja. There was a 55 Chevy racer that always got me fired up in the 80s.
In the most recent Hemmings Motor News Jan. 2009, the first 1967 Baja Boot was sold at the B&B auction for $199,500. WOW! It was listed in poor restored condition but the photo looked real nice. Anyways, Rob (BAJA1000), did you buy it or did you sell yours??? Nice collection by the way. I am proud to have my Hickey Roll bar! I am going to blast it and powder coat it but its real nice shape for the time being. Take care
That would be Larry Schwacofer's 55 that was sponsored by Joe MacPherson, the Hot rodder who owned car dealerships and recently passed away.
Hey Baja 1000 What happened to Hickey Enterprises? Who owns the molds for the drop down fiberglass hoods? I am looking for one for my dodge. http://www.chryslerheritage.com/dodgetruck/86Baha.jpg
I had a feature in the off road Adventures by 4 wheel parts, Look next mont for a feature in Dirt Sports magazine That when i had the truck in Las Vegas for the Mint 400 desert race, I was there getting sponsors for my new 1969 Race Blazer its a Hickey recreation, Its 100% built in my shop even the Hybred 9" front axle with dana 70 outter C's and dand 60 knuckles, I spent 2 monthe building the molds for the one off fiberglass race body, This thing will be bad ass when finished
Mark Mendenhall is a friend, I have been there many times, I own the 1970 Olds 442 the Garner raced then it went to the Mendenhalls, Now is being restores in my shop
Im very interested in more pics. I visited Mr. Hickey's shop in Ventura many times and purchased quite a few parts from him back in 1973. I was talking to the guys at off road unlimited a few years back, and they told me they had purchased the molds for all of Hickeys diff covers, but dont know about anything else.
I have a Vic Hickey 12 bolt diff cover if anyone is interested. I just dug it out of a box of old speed equipment. If anyone is interested let me know. I would rather it go to a fellow Hammer! PM me if you are interested. J
If you want any pictures of the very first Chevy Trailblazer ever made by Vic Hickey please feel free to e-mail me. It's a 1961 on the model year.
Baja 1000, Any info on any of the featured vehicles from his catalogs or the many magazine features? I'd love to get a line on the Dodge 100 Vic built for Four Wheeler. Unfortunately Vic and my Dad passed away from the same illness. Spoke w/ Vic before he passed away. Had asked the same question of him but never got an answer before he passed away. He was in the process of selling the Boot at the time.
Thought this might be an appropriate place to let you all know that Drino Miller passed away this morning. R.I.P. Drino Regards, Chase
I think Hickey goes back to roughly 1953 in the rodding magazines I have...he was making double wheel setups for jeeps (Car Craft small issues) for more traction, later started appearing in HRM pioneering the Chevy V8 Jeep conversion before the off-roaders kind of became a separate part of car culture.
