I was gifted an early (32-36) flathead today from my boss. everything is there carb, generator, waterpumps, original distributor, even the bellhousing, trans with PTO, shifter and starter. The spark plugs are missing and I'm sure it's locked up. What should I do with it? It came out of a heavy duty truck then got tucked away. Can you convert the babbet mains? is it even worth hauling home? I'm new to Flatties I'm more of a Hemi guy any help would be appreciated.
Mix some WD40 (liquid, out of the can) 50% with diesel, (also 50%) mix well and pour a liberal (that is, a 'generous') amount down the spark plug holes. Let sit for 2 days, then turn it over, back and forth, at the flywheel. Hope this doesn't get dissed for saying the 'L' word...
Pull the oil pan and see if it is babbit or insert. If it's an insert block, then for sure it is worth saving.
free it up and sell it if you dont want it. some guy will use it for a model a project. dont try to make a fortune on it be hamb friendly.
Flatjack is right. inserts-go, babbit-determine the correct year and give it to someone who does resto's. My '35 came with a running, babbit brg motor, was told no one converts them to inserts.
You might consider posting over on our sister site The Ford Barn. Most likely more interest there in an early Flathead.
The 32 block with the straight down water jacket drains are very valuable now. Even the 33/34 with no pan vent is getting up there. Any of the 2 inch journal 21-studs are valuable to restorers. One might even trade you for a later type motor if they want one bad enough.
