I'm helping a friend chase some mysterious ignition troubles. He's running a Hunt mag with a pertronics style module( not sure of brand). It's on his ford flathead V8. He drives just a few miles then it starts spitting and sputtering and shuts down to never return again. I don't know anything about this ignition system. Should it have some sort of resistor or capacitor before the internal coil? Just curious if anyone else has had this problem? What about internal adjustments? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Brian
First thing is to run it until it dies and then check to see if it is getting any spark before you start throwing money at it and hoping that you can make it run. It does sound like the control mod is getting hot, but you have to bear in mind that the overwhelming majority of all electrical problems are fuel related and vise versa.
There are numerous threads on here with regard to Hunt and Taylor-Vertex look-a-like magneto distributors. All have an inherent defect in that the module is too close to the coil and it creates "noise" causing the module to fail. GMC-buba has many, many posts on this and his solution is to retrofit with an external coil.
Cool. Thanks for the heads up on GMC-bubba . I hadn't checked te archives simply because I'm on a mobile device that is a pain in the rear when it comes to entering your search words.
Just went thru this yesterday with a friend's new roadster build. I walked in on him Thursday and he was installing a new JH mag. Wished he had said something about it before he ordered! Here is the old link that covers what some have discovered. Should be helpful. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=717701&highlight=magneto
