That is cheap. I worked as a manager for a yard we did all the heavy pulling. Depending on mileage I would get anywhere from 500 to 800. But I have seen a recent spike in 350.

Definitely. Up here they're about $90 to $125. For that kind of money they better be giving a warranty with it.

Around here, $400 will get you a complete running 350 all day long.

Is that for a guaranteed good running engine or a core motor that probably needs a rebuild?

My local Pick your Part in Sun Valley was bought out by LKQ some time ago...recently I walked in looking for a 2 barrel Rochester 2GC carb...first thing I did was look at where the price list boards used to be...they werent there. I thought how much could they want for a 2 barrel carb? You know the kind that there are millions of...in the old days used to be $20 max with core...now the price was something like $60. I laughed in the girls face, left the carb on the counter and started to leave...told the guard at the exit..he checked it on his computer and she was right...so I guess I will never be buying anything at a place I had been going to for over 30 years..

    Here? They don't care. A V8 is 225.00

  10. Price list in the other room, closest place to me, with core $175 any motor regardless whether it's a 350 Chevy, a 426 Hemi, or a Geo 3-cylinder washing machine motor. I checked one other local yard that keeps a price list online and it's about the same.

I'm not sure if for both of them that's long block only or if either of them include starter, alternator, and so on. No rhyme or reason to what comes with what they charge you for sometimes.

Sounds like I should buy a dozen and take them south and sell them for $400 complete.

yeah, regular salvage yards still get top dollar for any engine, but the Upullit types are menu priced at around $100 for any engine or trans. Of course, you get to do all the labor, then they'll hoist it out of the vehicle for you

We sold ours with a 30 day warranty. I paid 400 for a running 350 that ended up being junk and I rebuilt it. Do you want to rebuild one or drop in and go. Buying a used motor is always a gamble. If you are unsure I would say dont get it. I would always tell my customers that that motor runs but I could not say if mileage was actual. It is a risk but in 5 years of running a junkyard only had two engines comeback. If you are pulling it offer them 250.00 I would only pay that type of money if they were pulling it and gave you a warranty

Youre comparing apples to oranges...in the yard you are talking about its a full service yard..you can probably hear the engine run and it will probably be complete. In the OP's case its a Pick your Part type yard where YOU do the heavy lifting...you dont hear the engine run...and he said long block. I agree anywhere in the US $400-$800 should get you a running SBC that you can hear run...but we are talking about a long block that you have to pull youself. Maybe the OP's yard was bought out by LKQ. They have a right to price their stuff how they see fit..I just cant imagine many people buying there..

... and more stuff goes to China. It won't stop until it's all gone. The s**** prices are high, and this is a big part of why parts prices are up. But of course, nobody has money to throw around on their hobby like 15 years ago, so the stuff goes largely unsold and then it heads out to the smelters. Interesting to watch this stuff happen!

  16. $60 for a carb is nuts. What's it worth in s****, two, three bucks tops if it goes through with the car? I can't sell the damn things for $10 at swaps already pulled off and loose.

Rustynewyorker...I have admired your posts for years...I agree its nuts...I buy side inlet 2GC's at the swapmeets all day long for $5-$20. I just needed one in a pinch so decided to try a place I had been going to since high school. Imagine how pissed I was..after walking the whole place..finally finding one that wasnt taken apart and looked decent, pull it..then get told that price? All I could do was smile and walk out...the girl behind the counter didnt set the price after all...

At the u-pull here, you'd be lucky to find any domestic engine that is in one piece after it's been in the yard a day. People pull them apart to get timing chains, lifters, rocker arms, pushrods, whatever... they throw all the parts they remove on the ground, then leave them open to the elements. If I wanted a complete engine I'd go to the full service yard, it's cheaper in the long run.

Im sure that it is a Corvette engine. Ive only seen 3 SBC engines in my 40 years of life on earth that were NOT Corvette engines.

I think you can probably get a better deal on Craigslist...or better yet sometimes you can buy a whole running car to pull the motor out of. Havent pulled an engine out of Pick your Part in decades..and wont now. I find better stuff at the swap meet and on the net...

Out here guys buy used headlights, hoses and belts..go figure. When you see a complete engine you look around wondering if the car is on fire or something.

You cant hardly find a 350 gen 1 motor in a yard here. Last fall I went to all the local yards none had any. My buddy works at one place here he told me the last one they sold was a runner and went for 750.00. (that's just nuts but I know he wouldn't lie to me) I found a couple privately. Both were unknown condition had been sitting out of the vehicles and were late70's early 80's era 350's and were priced at 350-450.

Our local pick n pull has gone the same way. They are fast moving toward full service yard prices for their junk, with you doing all the work and hope you get lucky with a good part. I have noticed a marked change since a young whippersnapper has been given full authority on pricing. A few weeks back I was interested in a front clip. Fenders were no good at all, but easier to remove the whole thing than to take it apart. Plus some hardware that could be used. I asked this guy if he could cut the value on the full clip since the fenders were no good. I can easily think of half a dozen replies he could have made to me that could have been courteous, polite and correct. BUT, he promptly says to me, "Well, why do you want them if they are no good?" I don't like being talked down to, especially by someone who is likely little more than a third my age. Lots of other places I can go before I go back there.

Wow, for $500-$800ish I'd be inclined to buy a whole junk car and get the trans, rearend and all the rest of the hard parts.
Then list it as "parting out cheap" on Craigslist for a couple weeks to sell a few parts off it, then get some $$$ back by s****ping what's left.

I guess some of these pick-a-part wreckers must actually be getting those full service yard prices or they wouldn't stay in business.

Its the old school junk yard thought of holding out for a "slow dime" and sitting firm on your prices (and the car forever) rather than the "fast nickel" theory of continuously bringing cars in and selling parts off it as fast as you can.

  24. Come to Australia, where you can expect to pay $200 - $300 just for bare heads, the same for a bare block with nothing in it.. and a running one anywhere from $700 - $1500.

    Quit *****ing.

Try finding a running flathead over here. $1500 later..

this was for a 350 fi. long block ,no acc's, 60 day warranty, can't start it,only crank it by hand is allowed. I do all the labor. I was looking to find something reasonable so I called the junkyard and they want $800 to $1100 for a freakin 350

what happened to the days of a $1 an inch

We went to buy a sbc from a local yard. They said they would pull it and show us it ran for the low price of $1,000! Needless to say we didn't buy that one. we went to another yard 1 mile away and bought one for $150.
