Got the engine/transmission pulled out today, and the transmission torn down.. Pretty sure the synchros are the culprit:

The 3rd gear synchro has a real serious bevel on the small end- I ***ume those edges are supposed to be square right?? Also, the "threads" on the inside of the snychros are pretty much all gone.

Likewise, the "dogs" showed some pretty serious wear... All of them had a bend to them, and were pretty well mangled- pretty sure the problem must have started before I got a hold of it!

The front bearing does have some play in it- is this normal, or should I just go ahead and replace it as well?

Thanks for all the advice guys!

When I was a kid I would rebuild transmissions like I knew what I was doing. Never had any reference except for what somebody said and trial and error. When I was in my 60s I got a copy of Macs book and found out what I didn't know. Thanks Mac....
